The UK’s Sky News,has renewed its longstanding exclusive video partnership with Getty Images. For more than a decade, Getty Images has been the exclusive distributor for the Sky News archive that features latest news coverage and archive footage spanning over 30 years and contained in over 150,000 clips. Getty Images says its video collection these days contains over 23 million clips, including content from editorial video producers such as NBC News Archives, BBC Motion Gallery, VICE Media, ITN and Bloomberg.

SUE MALDEN LANDS FOCAL LIFETIME AWARD

Former Head of BBC Broadcast Archives, Sue Malden has been named the 2023 recipient of the Lifetime Award conferred by footage trade body FOCAL International. Sue, a former Chair of FOCAL, has, over the years, contributed to the Royal Television Society’s Archive group, the Consultative Committee of the British Library’s National Sound Archive, BAFTA’s Archive Committee, Executive Coordinator for the FIAT/IFA Archives at Risk project; IBC’s Archive Day and has acted as consultant to other media management initiatives. In retirement, Sue is chair of the board of trustees to MACE (the media Archive of Central England). Award presentations will be at FOCAL’s annual awards ceremony in London in June.

ECONOMIC HEADWINDS HIT GETTY REVENUES

Industry giant Getty Images reported a drop in revenues in the last quarter of 2022 saying it continues to see economic headwinds and foreign exchange effects. The the company recorded a loss of $22.9 million in the quarter, compared with a profit of $22.7 million for the same period a year earlier. Revenue declined 3.2 percent to $231.5 million on the back of foreign exchange pressures, Getty Images said income from creative licensing declined nearly seven percent while editorial licensing increased by over three percent. For the whole of 2022 revenues of $926.2 million showed a slight upturn.

SCREENOCEAN DIGITIZES REUTERS' HOLLYWOOD GLAMOUR

Working alongside staff at the Reuters Los Angeles bureau, UK-based footage house Screenocean has completed the second phase of an extensive digitisation and cataloguing project providing access to a full range of unique clips showcasing the glitzy celeb world of Hollywood. Thousands of master tapes have been digitised, expanding the collection first undertaken in 2020. The project follows in the footsteps of the success of the Reuters South Africa collection.

BRIDGEMAN PARTNERS WITH ITALIAN TRAVEL ARCHIVE

The UK’s Bridgeman Images has a new partnership with the Italian-based historical travel archive, 4K Historical Footage. Owned and operated by Filippo Carlot, the collection specialises in preserving and licensing locations filmed throughout the decades, offering all materials at 4K quality.

SHUTTERSTOCK REVENUES GROW

The latest financial results from Shutterstock show last year’s income at $827.8 million showed a seven percentage increase over the previous year and forecasts further growth in 2023. A royalty-free house, Shutterstock markets photographs, vectors, illustrations, 3D models, videos and music. It claims 45 million video clips in its offering.

World Rugby and IMG have extended their exclusive partnership to manage and license the video archive for the international federation’s flagship competitions until 2024.  The agreement will include all archive footage from both past and upcoming tournaments, including the men’s and women’s Rugby World Cups, the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, Rugby World Cup Sevens and the men’s World Rugby U20’s Championship. In total, more than 3,600 hours of World Rugby content is currently available on IMG’s digital archive platform.

BBC & GETTY SIGN FOR ANOTHER FIVE YEARS

The five‑year deal sees Getty Images continue in its role as the exclusive global distribution partner of BBC Motion Gallery, the global content organisation's film and video clip sales business.

BFI PRESERVES NETFLIX MATERIAL

Netflix, which has an annual UK production budget of $1bn, has become the first streamer to have its series and films preserved in the national archive collection of the BFI (British Film Institute). Twenty-six productions reflecting the diverse communities of contemporary Britain are being digitally preserved in the archive. Netflix is marking its tenth anniversary of UK operations.

Shutterstock has a new a tie-up with Eugene, Oregan, based FILMPAC, a specialist stock footage and music boutique company that offers 100,000 video assets across 15 curated collections. The new material is being absorbed in Shutterstock and Pond5’s on-line offerings that now boasts 27 million videos. Reporting third quarter earnings, Shutterstock highlighted a revenue increase of 5% to $204.1 million.

ROW IN UK OVER QUEEN ELIZABETH COMMEMORATION FOOTAGE

The UK’s Guardian newspaper reports that the country’s tv channels are in a battle with the monarchy over who controls the historic record of Queen Elizabeth II’s commemorations. Buckingham Palace has reportedly insisted broadcasters could only retain an hour of footage for future use. The BBC, ITV and Sky News have been given a deadline to produce a 60-minute compilation of clips they would like to keep from ceremonial events held across the 10 days of mourning for the Queen. The newspaper says the royal household will then consider whether to veto any proposed inclusions. The vast majority of other footage from ceremonial events will then be taken out of circulation.

Industry body FOCAL International has opened its submissions process for Production and Researcher of the Year categories for its 2023 International Awards. The Awards celebrate the best use of archival footage across the creative industries, from advertisements and short productions to cinematic features. Submissions for the Restoration and Preservation, Footage Company and Footage Person of the Year categories will all open shortly. Early Bird entries submitted before December 16 are offered a 10% reduction on entry fees.

GLOBAL OFFERS NEWLY DIGITIZED HOLLYWOOD IN 4K

Global Image Works has newly transferred a 16mm vintage Hollywood and Los Angeles collection to 4K. The archive includes early movie premieres, film stars, and the glitz and glam of the early days of Hollywood. Highlights include shots of the original Brown Derby, Sardi’s, movie studio lots, and other famous Hollywood institutions. Also digitized to 4K is a collection of home movies from the acclaimed actress Rose Marie, best known for her role on the Dick Van Dyke show.

CANAL+ ENTERS DIGITIZATION AGREEMENT

Iron Mountain Entertainment Services has developed a new partnership with the French content producer and broadcaster Canal+ Group to digitize up to 110,000 hours of its tape archive, transforming the imagery into digital content for streaming platforms. The holding is contained in approximately 500,000 tapes.

GETTY’S FIRST REVENUE STATS SINCE RE-ENTERING PUBLIC SECTOR

With Getty Images back in the public sector after the successful completion of its business combination last month with CC Neuberger, financial details are back in the public domain via stock reporting requirements. It reports second quarter revenues at $233.3 million, an increase of 4.1% year on year. Creative content revenue decreased by one percent to $146.7m, while editorial sector upped 15 percent to $82.9m. Annual subscriptions income also showed an increase.The number of video clips on offer increased over the last year from 18m to 22m, and video customer activity amounted to 12.2 percent of overall.

Trade association FOCAL International has named four shortlisted footage houses vying for its annual Footage Company of the Year award. They are Frame Dealer, a French company offering pre-existing footage and tailor-made shoots; LOLA Clips, based in London and Los Angeles and representing 25 major collections; R3store, a London-based licensing and restoration house; and the Yorkshire and North East Film Archives that finds, preserves and provides public access to moving images made in or about Yorkshire and North East England. The award category is sponsored by Footage.net.

HISTORIC BRINGS THE IRA GALLEN COLLECTION TO THE MARKET

From 1972, Ira resurrected and preserved tens of thousands of vintage television commercials, children's tv shows, Hollywood outtakes and one-of-a-kind television programs. For 25 years he utilised his collection hosting the pioneering New York City public access program Biograph Days, Biograph Nights.
