Stock image and footage portal Shutterstock reports first quarter results showing 36% revenue growth and an expanding profit margin, while its royalty free image and video footage library and contributor base continued to expand. The New York-based company says its marketplace now holds 25m images and a million video clips, adding that its plans list its current number one priority as growing its already fast-dveloping footage activities because of "the increasing role video plays in the digital landscape." Shutterstock saw 125,000 new contributor video clips uploaded during the three month period. It operates its web portal in 28 different languages, having recently added four Scandinavian languages, and says two thirds of its $51m revenues came from outside the USA. Downloads of images and clips in the period totalled over 22m with income per download averaging $2.29. Getty Images won the Footage Library of the Year Award for 2013 at the tenth annual FOCAL International Awards held in association with AP Archive in London, an event honouring producers, filmmakers and other creative professionals who have used library footage in their productions. The Best Researcher award went to UK researcher Miriam Walsh for her work on the cinema release London - The Modern Babylon, while Ronny Temme was awarded for her work as an archivist at the EYE Film Institute in the Netherlands where she is Head of Sales. Producers from the USA, UK, France and Ireland took other awards, with 224 programming submissions coming from 18 countries. According to London's Guardian Newspaper, the demand for archive footage of the late Lady Thatcher has exposed problems with plans to make the BBC's new headquarters tapeless. BBC News staff were reported to have had to ferry tapes across London in taxis or by the London Underground or pay to get outside companies to get videos converted to digital because of the distance between its news operation and its archive tape store. The new stock footage operation was conceptualized and incubated by Gatena as a class project at the University of Southern California's Marshall School of Business Lloyd Greif Center for Entrepreneurial Studies. Purwin, who becomes Executive VP of the new company, has contributed to programs like BBC's Discovery Planet Earth, and films like Michael Bay's Transformers, Rob Marshall's Pirates of the Caribbean, James Cameron's True Lies, Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty, and Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park. NHNZ's stock footage archive Moving Images has secured exclusive rights to market action-packed game fishing footage from Matt Watson's Fishing Show. Watson, who catches game fish such as marlin in unusual ways, is reported to include in his exploits catching fish from jet ski and surfboard, and in one instance catching a black marlin by diving upon it from a helicopter. Industry body FOCAL International has named Paul Sargent, former Head Curator of the Imperial War Museum, as the 2013 recipient of its Lifetime Achievement Award. FOCAL, the Federation of Commercial Audiovisual Libraries, says for more than 30 years Sargent played a significant role in the British content industry, leading the commercial access team of the Imperial War Museum's Film Archive. In his work at the Musueum, he promoted the commercial use of the Film Archive collection, balancing the requirements of commercial users with both needs of film preservation and the wider priorities of the museum. Sargent also served on the FOCAL International Executive for many years and initiated significant training programmes. He retired from the Imperial War Museum in 2012. The FOCAL awards, which also feature achievement in the use of stock and archival footage across 18 production categories, are sponsored by the AP Archive and presentations will be made at a ceremony in London on May 2. Industry body FOCAL International says its team lobbying for caution in a bill before the UK Parliament which threatened to disturb copyright on film and motion material has won a major argument. The Enterprise and Regulatory Reform Bill was headlined to boost business confidence and includes clauses to modernise the UK's copyright framework. FOCAL has applauded the British Government's tabling of an amendment to exclude films and photographs from the scope of the an important clause in the new legislation. According to FOCAL, a Parliamentary statement has made it clear that "the safeguards we require are now Government policy."
