The British Universities Film and Video Council has launched a website exploring the British director David Lean's time at Gaumont Sound News. Complementing other events taking place this year to celebrate the centenary of Lean's birth, the site focuses on a period at the beginning of his career when, in January 1930, he left features to join the newsreels as a cutter. It describes why Lean was drawn to the newsreels and what he did, the history of Gaumont Sound News and how the revolution of sound transformed the production and reception of the news in the early 1930s. A timeline of Gaumont Sound News also includes several films which can be viewed online. The website is the outcome of a short-term research project funded by the David Lean Foundation which has also added over 2000 Gaumont Sound News stories to the British Universities Newsreel Database. Separately, the British Film Institute has been involved in a three-year project, also involving Granada International and Studio Canal, to restore Lean's first 10 feature films.
