June 1, 2006 BBC JOHN SIMPSON PACKAGE ON ISHAQI MASSACRE NY1/X75/Slugged: 1815 BBC PKG X75 ================================================= SLUG/CORRESPONDENT: IRAQ / JOHN SIMPSON INTRO: The BBC has obtained disturbing pictures of another alleged massacre in Iraq . A senior Iraqi police officer has signed a report saying American troops gathered a family of eleven into one room and shot them all. The dead included four women and five children -- among them a six month old baby. A US official claimed they were all killed in a firefight with an Al Qaeda terrorist. Our world editor John Simpson is in Baghdad tonight. Story embargoed to 2200BST 01/06/06. The Ten O'Clock news has obtained new video evidence that US forces in Iraq may have been responsible for the deliberate killing of innocent civilians. The video pictures appear to challenge the US military's account of events which took place in the town of Ishaqi on March 15th 2006. Iraqi police have already accused American troops of the deliberate killing of 11 people, including 5 children, in a raid on a house in the town. The US authorities say they were involved in a firefight after a tip-off that an al-Qaeda supporter was visiting the house. They have stated that the building collapsed under heavy fire and bodies were found in the rubble. But the new video pictures, obtained from a hardline Sunni group which opposes the coalition presence in Iraq, appear to contradict that initial US account. They show a number of dead adults and children. The BBC has compared the new pictures with other footage of the incident which we know to be genuine. The new tape has not been tampered with and we believe it to be a genuine record of events. The US authorities in Baghdad have told the BBC today that there is an ongoing investigation into the events at Ishaqi.
