VS Jason Statham signing autographs ' THE BANK JOB' IN LONDON'S WEST END The cast of Roger Donaldson's ' The Bank Job' raided London's West End on Monday ( Feb 18th) for the world premiere of the highly charged thriller set in 1970s London. It's inspired by a true event - a daring, unsolved robbery which took place 35 years ago in London's Baker Street. Jason Statham stars as Terry, the car dealer with a dodgy past and Saffron Burrows is Martine, the successful model from his old neighbourhood who inveigles her old flame and his friends into undertaking the bank robbery. Sir Anthony Hopkins was also on hand at the premiere, signing autographs for the crowd: "Roger Donaldson the director is a friend of mine and we've done two movies together, I don't know anything about the film, this film, but I'm glad to be here and give him some support," he told AP Entertainment. Jason Statham is much in demand on the American side of the Atlantic to play British bad boys but he told AP it was good to be home: " Most of my work comes from further afield, working in Canada, working in the US, there's nothing more rewarding than coming back and working in the UK, it's a lack of material for me!" David Suchet - Tv's ' Poirot' - is also in the film and was revelling in his first ever movie premiere: "I played in 'Executive Decision' where I played a Muslim terrorist and the reason I never made that premiere in America was there was a whole walking around with banners thing against my character, I could have been killed if I'd gone to that premiere which is why this is my world premiere first, " he explained. The screenplay is based on the 1971 theft of millions of pounds from a Baker Street bank in what was known as the "walkie talkie" robbery. Britain's biggest-ever cash haul also involved an unknown quantity of valuable and illicit tiems concealed in the vault's safety deposit boxes, inspiring a story which involves murder, corruption and a sex scandal with links to the Royal family. ' The Bank Job ' opens in the UK on February 28th 2008.
