A Kansas doctor known for performing late-term abortions was murdered at his church Sunday morning (5/31). One man is being held as a suspect, but charges are still pending in the ongoing investigation. Dr. George Tiller was shot to death while he was ushering at Reformation Lutheran Church in Wichita. Witnesses exchanged words with the shooter and were able to give police a discription and his license plate number. Fifty-one-year-old Scott Roeder was arrested a few hours later near Kansas City. In 1996, Roeder was arrested in Topeka after bomb components were found in his car. He was charged with criminal use of explosives and sentenced to 24 months of probation. That conviction was later overturned on appeal due to an illegal search of the car by law enforcement. At the time, authorities said Roeder was a member of the anti-government Freemen group. In recent years, a man using the same name made internet postings against Dr. Tiller and his late-term abortion work. The District Attorney says her office is waiting for police to submit the findings of their investigation before filing formal charges. The office has 48 hours to do so from the time of the arrest.
