FIRST LADY OF FASHION HONORED BY THE CFDA Michelle Obama keeps feeling the love from the fashion world. She was honoured with a special tribute from the Council of Fashion Designers of America board of directors for her contributions to the world of fashion. Although she was missing from the crowd at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts on Monday (15 JUNE 2009), Obama's presence was felt throughout the star-studded ceremony, which included Heidi Klum, Blake Lively and Kirsten Dunst. Klum said that Mrs. Obama's style has revolutionised political fashion: "I think it shows that beauty and brains can also have a lot of style. And that not just a lot of women who are in politics have to wear dark blues and grays and dark greens and it's all a bit sad. I think that she put a lot of colour into politics and I think that a lot of women admire her for her beauty, for her brains, but also because she has a lot of style." Designer Michael Kors has had the honour of dressing the first lady. "I think she likes playing around with clothes, expressing herself," said Kors" I think she knows that fashion's a big part of expressing yourself. And it doesn't mean that you're any less intelligent or brilliant because she's all of that." The evening's host, Tracey Ullman, poked fun at Mrs. Obama's preppy looks: "She looks fabulous in most things and I love when she met the queen in a cardigan. That killed me." Wide of man looking at Michelangelo's 'Torment of Saint Anthony' MICHELANGELO'S TEENAGE TORMENT An exhibit showing what is believed to be Michelangelo Buonarroti's first painting marked the start of a summer-long exhibition at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art on Tuesday. Michelangelo known for his sculptures and drawings was an accomplished painter before ever learning to carve marble. He studied in Florence during his youth and it is during this time the work on display 'Torment of Saint Anthony' comes. The work is a copy of a well-known engraving of the time named 'Saint Anthony Tormented by Demons' by Martin Schongauer (1448-1491.) Experts believe Michelangelo was 12 or 13-years-old when he made it. The two works hang side by side at the exhibition for comparison. Keith Christiansen curator for the department of European paintings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art says he believes the painting is Michelangelo's first because of the "almost awkwardly dense cross hatching". "When I looked and I thought that this is exactly what we find in Michelangelo's earliest pen drawings, this precise kind of hatching, no body but Michelangelo does this," Christiansen said. Guitar virtuoso Steve Vai made a special appearance at the Indigo2 venue to collect the 'Riff Lord' award. On the red carpet, the Grammy award winner had advice for newcomers to the rock scene. "Well there's a lot of distractions in the music business and there can be a lot of distractions in life," Vai said, "but if you love the guitar than everything else is gravy. Nothing else is as important as you're relationship with your guitar." In addition to the award show, thrash metal icons Anthrax played a rare intimate show for 500 fans, as part of three hours of live music on gig-boat stage HMS Anthrax. Widely considered pioneers of the genre, Anthrax say for them, it's all about the music.
