Close up of Silki carrying cub down a branch STORYLINE: A baby leopard cub was presented to the public for the first time on Thursday at Rome's Bioparco zoo. A dark, shaky video showed the first shots of the Iranian leopard cub, born on September 1 at the zoo. For weeks the rare leopard cub has remained inside a walled area and only a few days ago did zoo-keepers finally get near enough to capture a few shots. And then the next day the cub's mother, Silki, decided to bring her cub out to show the father, Bahar. She carefully lifted the cub in her mouth and carried it across the cage and up a branch to a wooden platform. Bahar neared the fence and moved back and forth as he inspected his offspring. Zoo-keepers say they are keeping the father away to protect the cub. Silki seemed very attached to the cub's father and immediately went to the fence to greet him in the morning. The cub doesn't have a name yet, nor do zoo-keepers know the sex. But it's already attracting curious parents and children to the zoo. Iranian leopards are an endangered species. Estimates say there are about 1-thousand of them left in the wild. They live in the mountainous area between Iran, Turkmenistan and Afghanistan. In the wild they live solitary lives, mostly hunting wild boars, goats and wild sheep at night, using their powerful sense of hearing and night vision. According to zoo officials the male and female leopards remain together for brief periods when the female is in heat. Leopards have a very brief period of gestation - only three months. Marco Subrizi, the chief zoo-keeper for the carnivores at the Bioparco zoo says that the leopard cub with will remain with her mother for several years. Both the cubs' parents are four years old and came to the zoo from captivity: the father from Budapest, Hungary and and the mother from Beauval, France.
