SOUNDBITE (English) Chris Bryant, Labour MP: "The only way we can get to the full truth and to the heart of the cover up is to have a public inquiry led by a judge in addition to the police investigation." 15. Interior of House of Commons STORYLINE A British tabloid newspaper faced claims on Tuesday that it hacked into an abducted teenager's phone messages, possibly hampering a police inquiry into her murder. The case has refocused the spotlight on the already tainted News of The World, part of Rupert Murdoch's global media empire at News Corp. It also comes as Murdoch is trying to engineer the politically sensitive, multi-billion-pound takeover of broadcaster BSkyB in Britain. 13-year old Milly Dowler's abduction in 2002 while walking home from school in Surrey, south of London, transfixed Britain until her decomposing body was found six months later in the woods by mushroom pickers. But while police were pursuing all leads and Milly's parents were making dramatic appeals for any information that could be useful, a private investigator working for the News of the World tabloid allegedly hacked into her mobile phone, listened to her messages, and even deleted some to make room for possible new ones. Serial killer Levi Bellfield was convicted of Milly's slaying two weeks ago. He was already serving a life sentence for two other murders. Pressure mounted on Tuesday for Rebekah Brooks, editor of the tabloid when Dowler disappeared and now a top Murdoch executive in the UK, to resign. There were signs of a developing boycott when Ford UK announced it would not advertise in the News of the World because of the hacking. Grocery chain Tesco and Virgin Media both said they are considering withdrawing ads as well. Yet Brooks, a Murdoch confidante, refused to step down. "We were all appalled and shocked when we heard about these allegations yesterday," Brooks wrote on Tuesday in an email to her staff. "I am sickened that these events are alleged to have happened. Not just because I was editor of the News of the World at the time, but if the accusations are true, the devastating effect on Milly Dowler's family is unforgivable." News International spokesman Simon Greenberg said News of the World executives met with Scotland Yard investigators on Tuesday to discuss the new allegations. "We have written to the family and to their solicitor to say that we want to establish the facts as quickly as possible and make sure that they get to know whatever we find first and we will be cooperating with the police fully to establish everything that we can," he said. He added that Brooks has Murdoch's full confidence. She also enjoys a friendly relationship with British Prime Minister David Cameron and his wife Samantha. Cameron has already been hit by another News of the World hacking scandal - his communications chief Andy Coulson resigned earlier this year because of his previous role as News of the World editor. Speaking during a brief visit to the Afghan capital, Kabul, Cameron condemned the grotesque press intrusion saying that "if they are true this is a truly dreadful act and a truly dreadful situation" and called for a full inquiry. Ed Miliband, leader of the opposition Labour Party, said the events were "a stain" on British journalism. "This goes well beyond one individual. This is about the culture and practices that were obviously going on at that newspaper, the News of the World," he said. Lawmakers in parliament decided to hold an emergency debate on Wednesday over the phone hacking. The call for a debate came from Labour's Chris Bryant, who called for a public inquiry, alleging the Metropolitan Police had failed to fully investigate claims of phone hacking. After years of denials, the News of the World has admitted to hacking into the cell phone voicemail systems of many celebrities and sports stars and offered cash settlements to some victims. One of its royal editors, Clive Goodman, and private investigator Glenn Mulcaire have been jailed for hacking into phones used by aides to the royal family. Five more people have been arrested since a fresh police investigation began in January. The paper also faces dozens of lawsuits stemming from the illegal hacking.
