Tomorrow will mark three months since he stepped down -- after more than 30 years in power. His departure was forced by mass protests -- on the streets of the capital -- as people demanded democratic rights and reforms. But the pace of change is proving to be slow -- and as our Middle East Editor Jeremy Bowen reports -- the violence hasn't gone away. The theatre will be finished in October in its original 19th-century design (1856 year was the first reconstruction), with restored czarist insignia, embroidered silk tapestry and acoustics-improving fir and papier-mâché panels, the subcontractor Summa Capital said Monday. The rectangular building, home of the world famous Bolshoi Ballet and Bolshoi Opera, also will have its original violin-shaped auditorium. The company said some 3,500 construction workers are still busy adding sophisticated electronic and hydraulic devices, redesigning the stage floor to ease the ballet dancers' pain and completing an underground stage located just 30 meters (yards) from a metro station. The 1825 building stood on thousands of stained oak stilts stuck in central Moscow's constantly moist soil, but after nearby rivulets were encapsulated in underground pipes, the stilts dried up and collapsed. It was further damaged by fires and a 1941 Nazi bombing. Soviet founder Vladimir Lenin wanted to close the ornate theatre, which he saw as a symbol of decadent aristocracy, but the Communists ended up using the theatre for party gatherings. Lenin's death was announced from the theatre?s stage, and the troupe was twice awarded the Order of Lenin, the Soviet Union's highest award. While the ballet and opera corps enjoyed generous benefits and tirelessly toured the world, the building's acoustics were crippled by the remodelling of the hall and the filling of a gigantic hollow resonator under the orchestra pit with concrete. After the Soviet collapse, the theatre troupe tried to shed its conservative reputation by staging several controversial productions. Another obstacle has been accusations of embezzlement and fraud in the rebuilding. In 2005, the theatre closed for a reconstruction that state auditors now say has cost at least Productions continued at a nearby auxiliary theatre. Investigators said in 2009 that millions of dollars have been misspent by a subcontractor, and the Moscow government has several times fired subcontractors and officials responsible for the reconstruction. Flying his jet-propelled wing attached to his back, and steering only by movement of his body, Rossy launched from a helicopter at 8,000 feet into the breathtaking blue of the Grand Canyon sky. Skimming the rockscape at speeds of up to 190 mph, Jetman sustained flight for more than eight minutes, 200 feet above the rim of Grand Canyon West. To end the flawless precision flight, Rossy deployed his parachute and gracefully descended to the canyon floor. An earlier flight scheduled for Friday, May 6 was cancelled when final FAA certification was held up due to the difficulty in classifying Mr. Rossy's one-of-a-kind jet-powered wing. By the time the process was complete, sufficient practice flights were unable to occur prior to the scheduled 9 a.m. flight. "My first flight in the U.S. is sure to be one of the most memorable experiences in my life, not only for the sheer beauty of the Grand Canyon but the honor to fly in sacred Native American lands," Rossy stated. "Thank you Mother Nature and the Hualapai Tribe for making my lifelong dreams come true." Jetman has already won global acclaim for his successful jet-powered flights cross Lake Geneva and the English Channel. But this was the first time he had ever achieved his dream of flying in the purest sense in the U.S. ? and his choice of the Grand Canyon, where eagles soar, reflected the deep significance of the site both to Rossy and to the resident Hualapai people. The UN's refugee agency (UNHCR) also said at least 800 migrants fleeing Libya had been lost at sea in three Page: 3 Printed: 11/05/2011 17:08:04 110511 The UN's refugee agency (UNHCR) also said at least 800 migrants fleeing Libya had been lost at sea in three boat sinkings before the latest ship went down off the coast of Tripoli on Friday. The UN painted a horrifying picture of Friday's sinking, which left migrants, many from Somalia, trapped below deck and drowning within sight of the shore of Tripoli. Spokeswoman Laura Boldrini also addressed a report by the Guardian newspaper that one migrant ship had been left adrift for weeks, ignored by military aircraft and vessels in late March. "How (is it) possible that you have a boat for two weeks adrift without any kind of intervention? In a moment when we know that there are so many activities going on, this sounds really difficult, sounds really difficult to accept," said Boldrini. The Reverend Moses Zerai, an Eritrean priest who has long worked with migrants and refugees, said he was contacted by people aboard a ship whose call for help was ignored by military aircraft and vessels in late March. The priest said he was told by the Italian Coast Guard that they had sounded the alarm to all the maritime authorities but when there was no news he called NATO. He said the ship was eventually approached by a helicopter on March 26, that provided them with water to drink and biscuits to eat, and afterwards it vanished. "They drifted for 15 days and slowly people started to die. The first to die were the two children and then from hunger and thirst 61 people died," Zerai said. Some refugee campaigners have questioned whether Europe is doing enough to help those stricken at sea. NATO has denied that its units were involved in the incident and spokesperson Carmen Romero said ships under NATO command will always respond to calls from ships in distress. "This is their duty under the law of the sea, and to suggest that our ships' captains would do otherwise is unfair and is disrespectful," Romero told a news conference. Romero also said NATO had received reports that Gadhafi gunmen forced migrants into at least one boat in recent days, which sank soon afterwards. Speaking about Friday's sinking, Romero said, "If confirmed, that would be just another proof of the regime's disregard for human safety and human life." International agencies have also said some recent migrants report being forced onto dangerously packed ships at gunpoint by Libyan soldiers. The UN accused the Libyan government of complicity in a rising number of deadly smuggling incidents, many involving workers from sub-Saharan Africa who had moved to Libya to find work before war broke out there in March. A spokesman for Moammar Gadhafi suggested that increased illegal immigration was the price European nations would pay for their military and political support of the rebels trying to topple Libya's strongman. Italy and Libya struck a 2008 deal to return would-be migrants intercepted at sea to Libya without screening them first for asylum. The agreement, criticised by refugee rights groups, reduced the number of migrants arriving in Italy from 36,000 in 2008 to 4,300 in 2010. The UN said migrants' boats started leaving Libya for Europe again on March 25, the day NATO took over military operations. About 14,800 since have made the gruelling journey across the Mediterranean in rickety ships run by smugglers who rarely provide enough food and water.
