The story was also carried in news bulletins on the independent channel Al Rai. According to state television, the man subsequently evaded capture. Two other police were injured in the shooting in the Hawally suburb, the report said quoting a statement by the Interior Ministry. The man, named as Fawwaz Tlaiq al-Otaibi, shot at police chasing him after he entered a shop in Hawally, according to the television report. The man was said to have escaped into an awaiting car with a number "of his colleagues" in it. "One of the suspects in the car" reportedly shot at police as it left the scene killing and injuring the policemen. Security forces were continuing efforts to arrest al-Otaibi and the others, according to the report that did not specify what they were suspected of. The incident comes as Kuwait has recently increased security at road junctions, near hotels, embassies and oil installations citing a number of threats. The interior minister, Sheik Nawwaf Al Ahmed Al Sabah said in remarks published on Sunday the country has received threats, but he did not say who made them. American troops based in Kuwait and US civilians contracted to them have been targeted by Islamic extremists who oppose their presence here although the country is a major ally of Washington. One Marine and one civilian contractor have been killed in attacks.
