Lichtman, Presidential Historian, American University: "You've got to see at the convention John Kerry reintroducing himself to the American people. At this point no one can tell you anything about John Kerry because he just hasn't made the headlines, he hasn't captured the public imagination - but he has the time to do it. The convention is a critical moment and obviously the debates are another critical moment." APTN Washington, DC - 16 July 2004 7. Close-up Kerry walking on stage 8. SOUNDBITE: (English) E.J. Dionne, Brookings Institute Scholar: "I think Vietnam will be all over that Convention. Some of the most effective advertising Kerry had in the primaries was about his Vietnam experience. In the bio (biography) spot, which has run all over the country in swing states, you know ... when John Kerry went into that river he risked his life. That is the kind of image that sticks with people. And so they do want to convey that, precisely because Democrats are typically attacked by Republicans as weak or not strong on defence, John Kerry is a guy who actually shot Communists, who actually fought in a war - is the best antidote to those charges." SOUNDBITE: (English) Dennis Johnson, Associate Dean, School of Political Science, George Washington University: "2000, of course, was the tightest race of all, I am afraid we are going to have a repeat here. It is going to be a very tight race." APTN Cleveland, Ohio - 7 July 2004 25. Close-up John Kerry and John Edwards holding hands, as they are covered by confetti STORYLINE: As voters in the United States start to turn their attention the race for the White House this November, Democrats are hoping their national convention in Massachusetts next week will spotlight their presidential candidate. And despite serving 22 years in the U-S Senate, political analysts agree that John Kerry is in need of a national re-introduction. Democratic Chairman Terry McAuliffe says the four day convention will help highlight how John Kerry and his running mate John Edwards will get the United States back on track - at home and abroad. This year's Democratic convention theme is "Stronger at Home, Respected in the World." Away from the glitz of the Los Angeles convention four years ago, the Senator from Massachusetts should be feeling comfortable at the convention. It is being held in his home town, Boston. Former presidents, one-time rivals, military veterans and family members will help tell Kerry's story as he prepares to accept his party's presidential nomination. The opening night of the July 26-29 convention will feature former Presidents Carter and Clinton and former Vice President Al Gore. Democratic pollster, Anna Greenberg, says the Kerry-Edwards ticket has to set the stage for the national audience, which is only now starting to tune into the presidential campaign. Kerry's service in Vietnam will be highlighted - some of the crewmates from his Navy swiftboat in Vietnam, who have been familiar faces on the campaign trail, will help introduce him. Political analyst and scholar, E.J. Dionne, says highlighting Kerry's military record is an effective rebuttal to traditional Republican claims that Democrats are weak on security issues. Even with the anticipated up-swing in popularity for candidate Kerry after the Democratic convention, the Republicans still have their own convention to extol the virtues of a second four year term for President George W. Bush Once both have taken turns highlighting their candidates, platforms and campaigns ... analysts predict the 2004 presidential race will be neck and neck to the finish.
