Rainbow Warrior STORYLINE: The environmental group Greenpeace said it confronted a freight ship in Holland early on Thursday carrying U.S. military equipment to the Gulf, in protest against a possible war in Iraq. Activists from the group attempted to board the cargo vessel - MVAS Progress - in Rotterdam port in three rubber dinghies, but were intercepted by police, according to Greenpeace. Greenpeace says that U.S. military personnel used water cannons to try and stop them climbing onto the side of the cargo vessel. The group also sailed its Rainbow Warrior ship alongside the American vessel in protest and tried to prevent the craft from leaving Rotterdam en route to the Gulf region. Greenpeace video footage of the protest showed several of the protestors being taken away by authorities, and a Rotterdam police spokesman said 10 activists had been arrested for trespassing in a secure area around the ship, according to the Reuters news agency. Greenpeace says it knows of one activist, an Australian, that has been arrested. The group is opposed to war on Iraq whether or not an attack is sanctioned by the United Nations. Greenpeace considers the solution to weapons of mass destruction is collective international arms control and disarmament.
