Van carrying Specter from police station to hospital (for unknown injury) MUSIC LEGEND ACCUSED OF SLAYING B-MOVIE ACTRESS Veteran record producer Phil Spector was facing a murder charge today after a B-movie actress was found dead at his Californian mansion. Spector was expected to appear in court within days to be formally charged with first degree murder. The 62-year-old music industry legend was arrested after the body of Lana Clarkson, 40, was found at his palatial home in the Los Angeles suburb of Alhambra yesterday. Ms Clarkson appeared as a dancer in Brian De Palma's 1983 film 'Scarface, 'starring Al Pacino, but was best known for her "sword and sorcery" roles in films such as 'Deathstalker,' 'Barbarian Queen' and 'Barbarian Queen II: The Empress Strikes Back. ' She had also appeared in numerous American TV shows, and her most recent film credit was in 2001 as Dr Ellen Taylor in March, James Mercurio's film about an insurance salesman trying to save his marriage. Accroding to police, she had been shot dead and her body was found sprawled in the marble foyer of reclusive Spector's castle-like home. Police also recovered a gun from the mansion. A chauffeur who drove the actress and Spector to the record producer's home called police after hearing gunshots, sources told the Los Angeles Times. The couple were reported to have met on Sunday night, just hours before Ms Clarkson's body was discovered. Police were called in the early hours of yesterday morning and arrested Spector almost immediately. He was taken into custody at Alhambra Police Department for questioning as part of a murder investigation and later charged. No one else is being sought in connection with the murder and bail for Spector was set at one million dollars. He could appear in court for arraignment as early as tomorrow. Attorney Robert Shapiro, whose clients have included former football star O.J. Simpson, was representing Spector. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989, Spector, who had become increasingly reclusive in recent years, created the "Wall of Sound" effect that involved over-dubbing musicians to create a wide spectrum of sound. It changed pop forever. A wunderkind, Spector had his first hit when he was 17 and produced a string of '60s hits that defined an era. They included the Crystals' 'Da Doo Ron Ron' and 'Then He Kissed Me,' the Ronettes' 'Be My Baby' and 'Walking in the Rain,' and Darlene Love's 'Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)' and '(Today I Met) the Boy I'm Gonna Marry.' He also produced such music greats as Tina Turner the Beatles, the Righteous Brothers and George Harrison. Most recently he had been collaborating with the UK indie band Starsailor. His methods of working however were far from conventional. Appearing to thrive on other people's nervousness; Spector would sometimes behave oddly around recording artists, increasing the tension. In a bizarre 1980 collaboration with punk outfit The Ramones, the session that bassist Dee Dee Ramone recalled that Spector pulled a gun on the band.
