SOUNDBITE Sir Ian McKellen: "It's like all awards, it's recognition by people in the industry, people that really know what's easy and what's difficult, what's a real achievement. A pat on the back from your colleagues is one of the nicest things that you can get and so that is what it means. Your colleagues and people you don't know have said good work, well done." 24. SOUNDBITE Stuart Kemp ( European Film Editor - Hollywood Reporter ): "The nominations are very Hollywood driven which is a testament to the ability of the distributors of these movies to get them out to the voting people of BAFTA. So the tapes have been sent out and everyone has seen them. It is a very Hollywood-centric line up that the BAFTAS this year have. It has one all out to be an indicator for the Oscars, I think the Oscar nominations are likely to be very similar in feel and line up as these BAFTA ones are. It's what BAFTA originally wanted, to be a real positive indicator for the Oscars and that is what they have achieved this year, in all categories it is very Hollywood-centric." 25. Exterior BAFTA 'CHICAGO' AND 'GANGS OF NEW YORK' BATTLE IT OUT FOR THE BAFTAS 'Chicago' and 'Gangs of New York' led the way Monday in nominations for the the Orange British Academy Film Awards 2002 (aka the BAFTAs) each receiving nods in 12 categories. They have strong competition from 'The Hours', which was nominated for 11 of the awards to be handed out by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts on Feb. 23. All three films are up for Best Picture, along with 'Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers' and 'The Pianist.' The two major female Golden Globe winners, Nicole Kidman and Renee Zellweger, have been nominated for the same roles that won them their U.S. awards but this time will compete against each other in the same category for Best Actress. Kidman won the dramatic lead class at the Golden Globe ceremony on Jan. 23 for her portrayal of suicidal author Virginia Woolf in 'The Hours' while Zellweger picked up the musical-comedy award for her role in 'Chicago'. They are joined in the BAFTAs category by Meryl Streep, also for 'The Hours', Salma Hayek for 'Frida' and the surprise inclusion (a quirk to do with UK release dates, and the qualifying dates for inclusion) of Halle Berry for 'Monster's Ball', the role that won her the 2002 Best Actress Oscar. In the leading male category, newcomer Adrien Brody received his first nomination for 'The Pianist' and faces competition from awards veterans Michael Caine for 'The Quiet American', Jack Nicholson for 'About Schmidt', Daniel Day-Lewis for 'Gangs of New York' and Nicolas Cage for 'Adaptation'. The BAFTAs, previously handed out in April, became an essential stop on the pre-Oscar circuit after organizers shifted them to February two years ago. The date shift reconfirmed their significance as the Uk's top movie awards. This year's awards ceremony, to be hosted by comic and actor Stephen Fry, will take place exactly one month before the Oscars are handed out.
