Music clip 'Boys' BRITNEY 21 TODAY Pop icon BRITNEY SPEARS celebrates her 21st birthday today (December 2, 2002), three years after she broke onto the music scene with her smash hit 'Baby One More Time'. Born in rural Louisiana, teen popster Britney Spears was groomed for stardom from the start. She spent her early childhood performing in talent shows and dance reviews before, at age eight, she was discovered by a TV producer who hooked her up with a New York agent. Britney spent her summers in New York studying at the Off-Broadway Dance Center and the Professional Performing Arts School and began picking up television commercials. At 10 she landed a role in the off-Broadway production 'Ruthless' and a year later was cast in the Disney Channel's popular Mickey Mouse Club Show. After two years of taping the Disney show in Orlando, Britney returned to Louisiana and set her sites on a career in pop music. She was quickly recruited by Jive Records, home of the Backstreet Boys, and teamed up with Eric Foster (Whitney Houston, Hi-Five) and Max Martin (Robyn, Backstreet Boys), who produced her debut album. 'Baby One More Time' hit record store shelves in early 1999 and became one of the best selling albums of the year, helping to earn Spears a Grammy nomination for "Best New Artist." (The award went to teen queen rival Christina Aguilera.) Spears' sophomore effort, Oops!...I Did It Again, came out in May 2000. The album - which sold 1.3 million copies during its first week of release, beating Mariah Carey's record for the highest first-week sales by a female solo artist - earned Spears nominations in the Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance categories at the 43rd Annual Grammy Awards the following year. Britney mania reached an all-time high as fans eagerly anticipated her third album, and the paparazzi tried to document every move she made with boyfriend Justin Timberlake. In 2001, the simply-titled 'Britney' marked a departure for the pop princess. Spears moved away from bubble-gum pop and more toward techno (thanks to the production team of the Neptunes) and more mature ballads. The singles, 'I'm a Slave 4 U,' and 'I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman,' did their best to position Spears away from the pre-teen audience. 2002 has been a tumultuous year for Spears. The sales of her third album were considered disappointing, reviews of her big-screen debut in 'Crossroads' were less than stellar, and there were problems with her Manhattan restaurant Nyla, which resulted in her breaking off her involvement last week after just five months. Finally, a well-publicized break-up with Justin Timberlake, her parents' divorce, and a self-imposed six-month break from the business fueled rumours that Spears' once rock-solid career was beginning to crumble. Spears denied the rumours and told the story in her own words for People magazine. While there are no immediate plans to record another album, Spears, after a making a cameo in 'Austin Powers: Goldmember,' may concentrate more on acting. In fact, she signed a deal with NASCAR to make a film about car racing in the near future.
