That's Avril Lavigne, a seventeen-year-old popster from Napanee in Ontario, Canada, who has gone from small-town high school student to releasing a debut album in just a year and a half. Her story began with a videotape of herself singing and dancing, which she sent round to various labels. That resulted in a phone call from one company which led to her moving to New York to work on some songs. As luck would have it, someone from Arista Records heard her singing and brought along the head of the company, L.A. Reid, to check her out. He liked what he heard and signed her up immediately. Critics have compared her singing voice to Natalie Imbruglia and Alanis Morissette, wrapped up in a punk princess package. And although her youth means that people say she's like Britney Spears, Lavigne gets angry at the suggestion that they are anything alike. Now the album is finished, as well as her new single, 'Complicated', which is about past relationships. And she's looking forward to getting out on the road with her band of punky boys.
