Performance of 'What's Going On?' by various artists R KELLY LEADS BILLBOARD AWARDS Award season is getting into full swing in the States this week. Following Monday's VH1 Awards, the music industry's second ceremony of the week took place yesterday at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. This time top names from the hip hop world joined famous country singers for the 12th annual Billboard awards. Traditionally these awards are more about the money than the fans, with awards going to those who made the most money in record sales, with many awards handed out prior to the event. This year they were hosted by actor/comedian Bernie Mac and the event was broadcast live on Fox. Success story of the night was R'n'B star R Kelly, who won a whopping six awards - including 'best R'n'B artist', 'best R'n'B single' and 'best R'n'B album of the year'. Britney Spears kicked off the action with a suitably sexy performance of 'I'm a Slave 4 U' inside the fountains of the Las Vegas hot spot 'The Bellagio' hotel. Her beau, NSYNC's Justin Timberlake, was not to be outshone later on when he joined fellow band members on stage to perform 'Gone', which began with the group being lowered from the rafters in a lighted platform which slowly made its way to the stage. Soul diva Mary J Blige, hip hop star Nelly, No Doubt's Gwen Stefan, Eve, Angie Stone and Alicia Keys were among the guests at the show. The flamboyant Shaggy performed his hit 'It Wasn't Me' and won 'Male Artist of the Year', and NYSNC's album 'Celebrity' raised enough cash to get them the 'best album gong', selling more copies in one week than most others sell in a year. Country singer Tim McGraw took home country artist of the year but said he'd prefer to be at home with his wife, singer Faith Hill, who's expecting their third child in a few weeks. Destiny's Child were presented the 'Artist of the Year' award by British idol Sting, one of five awards received by the band, who have announced today that they are to temporarily split for a well earned break and to explore individual projects. The band insist that their planned European tour will still go ahead in May. The star of the show was Janet Jackson who received the 'Artist Achievement Award', from Sean 'P Diddy' Combs, to an extended standing ovation. Alicia Keys, who led all finalists by contending in eight categories, won the overall 'Female New Artist of the Year' trophy and the same honor in the R&B/hip-hop category. John Mellencamp was presented with Billboard's annual Century Award for creative achievement. Other performances of the night included No Doubt, followed by a collaboration of Alicia Keys, Angie Stone and rapper Eve. The show closed with the charity recording of Marvin Gaye's 'What's Going On'. Joining Jermaine Dupri to recreate the recent benefit recordings of the song that he orchestrated were Angie Stone, Combs, Mary J. Blige, Gwen Stefani, Jill Scott, Jamie O'Neal, Destiny's Child, Eve, Shaggy, 'N Sync, and Alicia Keys. The show was dedicated to late Beatles lead guitarist George Harrison, which was noted to the viewing audience with an on-screen memorial early in the evening.
