Performance ' Here Comes the Sun ' Travis STAR STUDDED UK POP CERMONY HONOURS MUSIC WINNERS The first ever Top of the Pops Awards ceremony honoured some of the hottest names in music on Friday. The UK's long running TV chart show tempted a host of stars and thousands of fans to the Manchester event. Celebrities including Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey, Kylie Minogue, Westlife, Travis, Nelly Furtado, Wyclef Jean, Mel B, Tom Jones and Natalie Imbruglia headed for the Manchester Evening News Arena for the ceremony. As with the VH1 music awards in Los Angeles, the stars paid tribute to late Beatle George Harrison during the British ceremony. Scottish indie band Travis performed an acoustic version of 'Here Comes The Sun', in front of the 12 thousand strong crowd. Travis performed the song after going onto the stage to accept the award for Top Album for their The Invisible Band collection. SIR PAUL McCARTNEY had also been due to attend the event, but pulled out saying he felt it would be inappropriate. He had planned to perform his single 'Freedom' and accept his award as the first entrant into the Top of the Pops Hall of Fame. Instead, the former Beatle sent a message dedicating the honour to his 'brother' Harrison. Award host Jamie Theakston read the statement "It was a great honor to receive this Top Of The Pops Award but because of the sad news I can't be here tonight to accept it. I'd like to dedicate this award with love to my brother George, without whom it all would not have been possible." Despite the sadness of many stars who spoke fondly of Harrison, the event was a celebration, honouring the world's most popular acts. KYLIE MINOGUE picked up two gongs - Top Tour for On a Night Like This, and Top Single for 'Can't Get You Out of My Head'. But the Artist On Top Of the World prize went to America's J-Lo, who performed her single 'Ain't It Funny' by way of thanks. One of the night's biggest cheers went to teen favourite WESTLIFE, who arrived to accept the Top Pop award. Top Newcomer went to NELLY FURTADO, who opened the ceremony with a performance of 'Turn Out The Light'. Other winners who were not on hand to accept their awards included Fat Boy Slim for Top Dance Act, Destiny's Child for Top RnB and U2 for Top Rock.
