The show was the first of two at Madison Square Garden - the second is tonight (Monday 10th September). They are his first concerts on American soil in more than ten years. Usher, Destiny's Child, and Naomi Campbell were among the stars at the event, which drew a capacity crowd - some of whom had paid up to USD 2,500 per ticket. Promoters said the tickets sold out within hours of going on sale. The stars were eager to sing Jackson's praises, and in many cases, remember a friend. Singer Kenny Rogers told APTN he still has early photographs of the star, taken when he was putting together a photography book. Jackson himself arrived in a white glittery jacket, with his close friend Elizabeth Taylor. The concert started nearly an hour late as the two stars were escorted to their seats. Sitting next to him was Macaulay Culkin, and Jackson's parents, Katherine and Joseph. The star-studded performances included Whitney Houston, who brought the house down with her rendition of 'Wanna be Startin' Somethin' ', a hit from Jackson's 'Thriller' album of 1982. Destiny's Child donned Jackson-style spangled hats and white gloves for a version of 'Bootylicious' performed to the tune of another huge 'Thriller' hit, 'Billie Jean'. Liza Minnelli broke down, declaring "I love you, Michael" as she sang 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' in a cloud of bubbles. But the performance the crowd were really waiting for was Jackson's own - he took to the stage with his brothers, to sing and dance his way through The Jackson 5's 1970 hit 'I Want You Back'. It was his first performace with his brothers since their 1984 "Victory" tour, Other scheduled appearances over the two concerts include Britney Spears, 'N Sync, Usher, Ray Charles, Marc Anthony, Al Jareau, Gladys Knight, Mya, Yoko Ono, Jill Scott, Alicia Keys, Shaquille O'Neal, Samuel L. Jackson, and Marlon Brando. For those with USD 20,000 or more to spend, there was an after-hours party with Jackson. At 43 years of age, and with more than three decades in the spotlight, Jackson has his sights set on another comeback. The concerts are part of Jackson's attempt to reclaim his King of Pop title after a six-year absence between albums. His new album 'Invincible' is due out at the end of October - last week, he released the first single, 'You Rock My World.' On Thursday night Jackson stole the show at the MTV Video Music Awards by appearing briefly on stage with 'N Sync. The Jackson concerts will be broadcast on CBS this autumn.
