STORYLINE: On May 2nd 2001, the World Music Awards once again paid tribute to the very best in contemporary music from around the globe. R&B singer, SISQO (album Unleash The Dragon) emceed the awards show with actress CARMEN ELECTRA ('Scary Movie', 'Perfume', 'Rent Control') in front of an audience packed with celebrities and hosted by Prince Albert of Monaco. Unlike other awards which are voted upon by fans or industry insiders, the World Music Awards are based on sales, trophies going to top selling recording artists from around the world by genre and by nationality. A full list of winners follows at the end of the script. But among those collecting awards were BRITNEY SPEARS (World's Best Selling Pop Female Artist, World's Best Selling Dance Female Artist), RICKY MARTIN (World's Best Selling Pop Male Artist, Best Selling Latin Male Artist, Best Selling Dance Male Artist), BACKSTREET BOYS ( World's Best Selling Pop Group), THE BEATLES (World's Best Selling Pop Rock Group), EMINEM (World's Best Selling Rap Artist), SHAGGY (World's Best Selling Reggae Artist), SANTANA (World's Best Selling Rock Artist) and CHRISTINA AGUILERA (World's Best Selling Latin Female Artist). NELLY and ANASTACIA were named best New Pop Artists, male and female respectively and Enya picked up the trophy for World's Best Selling New Age Artist. According to organisers, the World Music Awards, held annually at the Monte Carlo Sporting Club, is the world's largest and most glamourous music TV show. The last show, recorded by American ABC, was viewed by over 1 billion viewers worldwide. With broadcast rights to the show sold in over 160 countries, figures are likely to be comparable this year. The World Music Awards is the only European awards show on primetime television in America. Veteran Scottish singer, ROD STEWART, formerly of The Faces, was given a Lifetime Achievement Award. He also performed for the celebrity filled audience. Other artists singing for their royal supper included Ricky Martin, Christina Aguilera, Shaggy, Nelly, Anastacia, up-and-coming Canadian singer Nelly Furtado, Italian Eros Ramazotti, German band Pur, The Vengaboys, Belgian singer Lara Fabian and Algerian Rai singer, Cheb Mami. Talking of that celebrity packed audience, among those attending were boxer, Lennox Lewis, ex-Beatle Ringo Starr, actor Jeff Goldblum, racing driver David Coulthard, footballer David Ginola, models Alek Wek and Markus Schenkenberg and the band Eiffel 65. All proceeds from the evening will be devoted to the construction of a Princess Grace hospital in Mozambique.
