Exactly one month ago 13 high school students and two teachers from Uwajima Fisheries High School in the Ehime Prefecture of Japan waved joyously to friends and family seeing them off on their journey. The 499-ton ship left on January 10th to hunt for tuna, swordfish and shark. Twenty other people were also on board. When the U-S sub struck the fishing vessel 26 of those aboard were rescued. Missing were four students, two teachers and three crew members. Four of the rescued were receiving treatment at a hospital. A total of 12 suffered light injuries. In the town of Uwajima, town officials said they were trying to coordinate a response to the accident. Family and friends gathered at the high school trying to find out more information. SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) "There was this flash on television about the training ship. I called the school straight away but there was confusion." SUPER CAPTION: Relative Uwajima is about 675 kilometers (420 miles) southwest of Tokyo. The Prime Minister of Japan, Yoshiro Mori, has said the United States has apologized. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasuo Fukuda said the apology came from Franklin Kramer, assistant secretary of defense for international security affairs, and that Washington admitted responsibility for the accident. A spokesman for the U-S Embassy in Tokyo said the United States was making "every effort" to find the missing.
