Gladiator, which equalled the Crouching Tiger... score, included a posthumous nomination for Oliver Reed for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. Coming in close behind was Stephen Daldry's Billy Elliot, with 11 nominations, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay. Other likely winners include Steven Soderbergh's Traffic and Erin Brockovich, Ridley Scott's Gladiator and Philip Kaufman's Quills. Relph promised that this year's awards would be a great improvement on 2000's rather dismal affair. 'One of the problems last year was that we didn't have enough time to rehearse the ceremony,' he explained. And 2001 sees the awards ceremony shifting from its traditional April slot to a more exciting, pre-Oscar date on the 25 February. The change in date of the Baftas will definitely raise the event's profile, which organisers hope it will now rank alongside the Golden Globes as an indicator of possible Oscar winners. Relph's reasoning was that in the week leading up to the Baftas, all eyes will be on London as the Empire Awards happen on 19 February and it's also London Fashion Week. When asked how they will attract celebrities to the event, Stephen Fry told the assembled crowd "I am offering three different kinds of sex to everybody." The big name head count on the night (will Hollywood leave the sunshine?) will be the test of whether the Baftas can claim a to be key warm-up ceremony for the Oscars. Bafta winners are decided by a poll of over 4000 members in branches across the UK as well as in Los Angeles and New York. The Awards sponsors, mobile phone company Orange, have also created an Audience Award for most popular film, with 100,000 members of the public expected to be polled.
