Four girls and four boys were killed and twenty young people injured, two of them seriously. The coach from the town of Guetersloh was rammed by an oncoming truck on the Vienna-Salzburg A1 west motorway near the town of Poechlarn in the province of Lower Austria. The top back part of the coach is said to have been slit open in the collision, according to the bus owners, a company based in Harsewinkel near Guetersloh. The party was on its way to Plattensee in Hungary, where they had booked a two week youth holiday in a hotel. The children on the coach, aged between 14 and 17, were from Freiburg, Karlsruhe, Munich and Stuttgart, Germany. The survivors were taken to a local hospital for psychological counselling.
