Monet, one of the most celebrated Impressionists, led the way with his 1894 painting 'Le Portail (Soleil).' His 'Nympheas' sold for a much lower price of 7.6 (m) million U-S dollars and 'Camille Assise Sur La Plage a Trouville' was a relative bargain at 2.1 (m) million U-S dollars. The collection of work assembled for the auction represented works from a wide variety of famous artists such as Picasso, Degas, Matisse and Van Gogh. Henri Matisse's 'La Serpentine - Femme a la Stele - L'Araignee,' one of the most celebrated sculptures of the 20th Century was sold for 12.75 (m) million U-S dollars. It was executed in the artist's studio in 1909 working not from a live model, but on the basis of a photograph. 'Compotier et Guitare,' Pablo Picasso's still life dating back to 1932 was bought at $9 million. SHOTLIST: New York, United States - 10 May, 2000 1. Wide shot crowd, pan across room 2.
