Explosion: Danger Lurks THE DANGER OF HOT WATER HEATER EXPLOSIONS. CAUSES ARE SHOWN BY LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS & FIELD TESTS. HOW THESE EXPLOSIONS CAN BE PREVENTED BY THE CORRECT INSTALLATION OF COMBINATION TEMPERATURE & PRESSURE RELIEF VALVES. Ken Smith sez: This film was designed to show people why they should install Watts temperature pressure release valves on their hot water heaters. After building miniature houses in the middle of a field, Watts engineers place unvalved hot water heaters inside and then make them explode in bursts of superheated steam! Clapboard and shrapnel fly several hundred feet into the air and the filmmakers help our appreciation by filming in slow motion and by adding SFX of bomb detonations. The film ends with a parting montage of exploding water heaters and a title card: "Consult your plumbing contractor for recommendations."
