MS A Japanese laborer heating a roughly formed plow shear in a small coal heating furnace. This is done prior to putting the plow shear into hydraulic press where it is given its final shape. MS The Japanese bringing the heated plow shear over to the hydraulic press where another Japanese puts it into the press. MS Of two women putting an edge onto the plow shears by using a grinding machine. Taken at the heat tempering room of the Japan Iron and Steel Works. They are making farm and home implements. Made armor plate during the war. A series of shots showing method used in the making of coal brochettes for heating. In this series of cuts we see an old Japanese housewife mixing the coal dust with water, then forms little patties with her hand and then places them on a piece of tin which covers a static supply of water. Here the patties remain for several days to dry. Taken near the workers community of the Higashi Misome Coal Mine in Ube, Japan. MS A Japanese and his primitive, but effective, wood burning puffed rice and puffed corn gadget in the streets of Ube. The townspeople bring their rice here to have it "shot out of a cannon" similar, in principle, even though smaller than the equipment used by the makers of American puffed rice. It is difficult to tell whether the onlooking kids consider it a delicacy or just plain nourishment. CU The puffed wheat gadget, its operator and the kids who follow him. CU The puffed wheat gadget, with a wood fire burning under it, being hand operated. MS A crowd gathered around the gadget. CU The puffed wheat being shot from the machine as the pressure is released and the puffed rice is exploded into a wire cage. The scenes covered below were recorded at the Japan Iron and Steel Works at Yawata. This area has been referred to as the Pittsburgh of Japan and the Little Ruhr of Japan. This miners' age is 22. another coal miner aged 17. a group of average coal miners whose average age runs 14 to 17 years. assembly yard where coal miners line up in solid formation here they all bow towards the W paying their respects to their Emperor. from a position on an elevation shows the miners bowing at the command of their leader who has been placed nearest the camera, while men are seen below. Dramatic scene. Two false starts of two feet each have been left intact. The miners have about faced and are facing E and bow towards shrine on hill, clap hands. Miners render the hand salute to their leader. Short pan L to R then R to L, miners then about face. Hands are clapped to attract attention of the Gods to make sure that the Gods are listening to their demands for safety in their work days. Here the miners are lined up and searched before they enter the pit elevator, such items as inflammable materials are looked for and also a double check to the miners equipment and lamp. The ceremony the miners perform before they enter the mines. First they bow to the Emperor, about face and bow toward the shrine. A series of five scenes showing the miners walking to the pit entrance also some shots of the interior of mine shaft building as the miners and their flickering head lamps remind one of a swarm of lightening bugs. Two views showing the centrifugal air pump which supplies fresh air to the main vent shaft. Japanese Pine Root Oil Process in Kudumatsu, Japan. Opening scene shows two horse drawn carts moving down along a typical Japanese country road which leads to the Oil Plant. Carts are loaded with pine roots which are gathered in the hills. Carts are halted, drivers now begin to toss the roots on the side of the road near plant. A series of four scenes which establishes laborers chopping and sawing the pine roots into small sections which is the first step in the production of Pine Root Oil. A series of two shots showing a Japanese character loading a burlap bag with the sawed and chopped portions of the root. When bag is full he moves with bag into the vat room or shed. A series of shots showing the second step in the process. The burlap bags are dumped into large vats then the vats are covered tightly and sealed. Underneath the vats fires are kept hot in order to bring the steam up. Charcoal is used as a fuel. LS Water cooling system through which the vapor steam form of Pine Oil passes and which is cooled to a liquid form comprised of water and oil. Closer shot of pipes in water. Oil in liquid form drips from outlet pipe of cooling system into larger of the two drums submerged in the ground. The large tank received the oil which remains on top as it is lighter than the water.
