In England's Grand National steeplechase, the grueling course felled 37 out of a field of 47- -an action-packed, thrill-a-minute contest. BASKETBALL The most under-rated team in the National Invitational Tournament, the LaSalle Explorers, came from the bottom to victory. The Cinderella team from Philadelphia captured the hearts of US fans. BOXING Rocky Marciano donned the heavyweight crown--after knocking Jersey Joe Walcott out from under it, with a thirteenth round jawcrusher. A drama packed battle, with the richest prize in boxing at stake. AUTO RACING Memorial Day at Indianapolis saw the emergence of a new king of the speedways in the 500 mile classic--Troy Ruttman, youngest driver, and the heftiest, emerged the winner in the crowded field. BASEBALL The big story was the old story--the Yankees and their winning ways, with youngsters like Mickey Mantle and veterans like Allie Reynolds, subduing the Brooklyn Dodgers. It was their fourth straight world championship under the leadership of Casey Stengel. BOAT RACING Slo-Mo-Shun IV won new fame for owner Stanley Sayres, winning the coveted Gold Cup, and racking up a record mark of 185 m.p.h. on Lake Washington. Sayres' feat spurred England's famed John Cobb on to an ill-fated attempt at the speed mark in his jet powered Crusader, before the eyes of horrified crowds--his boat exploded. FOOTBALL A year of upsets for some grid titans, but a year of continued successes for Michigan State. Among their victims was Notre Dame, as the Spartans ran their undefeated string to twenty-four. THE OLYMPICS Winter and summer thrills at the international sports festival. 1952 saw more entries from more nations, more thrills, and more harmony than any of its predecessors.
