From CNN’s Jamiel Lynch

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) signed an executive order on Friday activating the Florida National Guard and directing state law enforcement agencies to provide resources to help local governments with an influx of migrants in the Florida Keys, his office said in a press release

Critical of President Joe Biden, DeSantis said in the release, “As the negative impacts of Biden’s lawless immigration policies continue unabated, the burden of the Biden administration’s failure falls on local law enforcement who lack the resources to deal with the crisis”

Dry Tortugas National Park in the Florida Keys has been temporarily closed to the public as of earlier this week, as CNN previously reported

On New Year's Day alone, over 160 migrants were encountered in the Florida Keys, according to a series of tweets from Walter N Slosar, a US Border Patrol chief patrol agent There were about 88 migrants encountered in the area on New Year's Eve, said Slosar

This is not the first time DeSantis has used his executive powers regarding the migrant situation

Last year, he deployed Florida law enforcement to Texas to provide additional support at the border there

Hundreds of migrants are now being transferred from Dry Tortugas National Park to the US Border Patrol (BP) station in Key West, a US Coast Guard spokesperson told CNN Thursday afternoon

From CNN's Melissa Alonso

A recent surge in migrants landing in the Florida Keys and lengthy federal processing procedures are creating a humanitarian crisis, according to the Monroe County, Florida Sheriff's Office (MCSO)

The MCSO has been assisting federal law enforcement agents with a spike in Cuban refugee arrivals since Saturday and continuing into Monday morning, the agency said in a statement Monday

Dry Tortugas National Park in the Florida Keys has been closed to the public since Monday due to the influx of migrants from Cuba, CNN has reported

Haitian and Cuban migrants' encounters near Florida have continued to rise in record numbers since last year
Since Oct 1, 2022, the US Border Patrol Miami Sector has experienced a 400% increase in migrant encounters, according to BP Chief Patrol Agent Walter N Solsar
