The suspected gunman in a shootout that stemmed from a Roseville hostage situation that left one person dead escaped law enforcement custody on Sunday morning, according to the Placer County Sheriff's Office.

35-year-old Eric James Abril escaped from the Sutter Roseville Medical Center, sheriff's officials said.

The sheriff's office said they learned Abril is not wearing a shirt and was not shackled at the waist, and they believe he's wearing orange jail pants. They described him as six feet tall with brown hair and weighing 175 pounds.

Placer County Sheriff Wayne Woo said Abril was admitted into the Sutter Roseville Medical Center on Thursday for an unknown medical condition.

Woo said Abril escaped at around 3 a.m.

According to a tweet from the Placer County Sheriff's Office, Abril was last seen around 3:39 a.m. on video surveillance near Rainer Court in Rocklin and then walking to Saddletree Lane.

The sheriff's office posted a surveillance photo of Abril and said residents are encouraged to review security cameras for sightings of him.

California Highway Patrol officials said officers were serving a search warrant during an ongoing felony investigation when one officer was shot around 12:30 p.m. near Mahany Park. Officers who were there shot back.

The Roseville Police Department officials said their officers came to assist after a CHP officer was shot, which is when another gun battle occurred between Roseville and CHP officers, and Abril.

Police said Abril took two hostages before he surrendered to law enforcement. One of the hostages, who was identified as James MacEgan was shot and killed. His spouse was identified by law enforcement as the second hostage.

Abril was injured during the shootout.

Abril was arraigned on four felony charges that included murder, attempted murder of a peace officer, aggravated kidnapping causing bodily harm and possession of a firearm by a felon.
