Authorities are involved in what appears to be a standoff in Stockton after a police sergeant was shot early Wednesday morning.

The shooting happened around 3:21 a.m. in the area of Gateway Court and Kentfield Road. Several roads are closed as the investigation continues.

Police told KCRA 3 that the sergeant was on patrol looking for a carjacking suspect in the area. The suspected vehicle was located in the area of Coventry Drive and Hillsboro Way.

The suspect led officers on a chase when the sergeant tried to stop the vehicle. The chase ended in the area of Gateway Court and Kentfield Road, where the driver got out of the vehicle and ran away.

At some point during the foot chase, the police sergeant was shot somewhere in the chest or shoulder area. The sergeant did not return fire, police said.

The sergeant is in stable condition.

SWAT teams are stationed outside a home nearby where the shooting happened, and are still looking for the suspect.
