TENSE MOMENTS IN LOS ANGELES - AT A TRADER JOE'S GROCERY STORE IN THE SILVER LAKE NEIGHBORHOOD.
THE SUSPECT SURRENDERED TO AUTHORITIES AFTER A THREE HOUR STANDOFF THAT LEFT ONE WOMAN DEAD.
Chief Michel Moore/Los Angeles Police: "Inside the store there was one woman who was shot and killed our officers rescued that woman from inside and attempted to render aid FLASH unfortunately unable to revive her. "
FAMILY IDENTIFIED THE VICTIM AS 27-YEAR OLD MELYDA CORADO, WHO WORKED AT THE STORE.
POLICE SAY THE INCIDENT STARTED AS A DISPUTE IN SOUTH LOS ANGELES, WHERE THE 28-YEAR OLD SUSPECT REPEATEDLY SHOT HIS GRANDMOTHER -- WHO IS IN CRITICAL CONDITION - AND INJURED ANOTHER WOMAN.
HE THEN LED POLICE ON A CAR CHASE THROUGH HOLLYWOOD, EVENTUALLY CRASHING NEAR THE TRADER JOE'S, OFFICIALS SAID.
Mayor Eric Garcetti/Los Angeles: "It was there where there was an exchange of gunfire, the suspect was wounded in his left arm and he went inside.
SOME CUSTOMERS IMMEDIATELY RAN OUT OF THE STORE -- AS POLICE SURROUNDED THE BUILDING...
OVER THE NEXT THREE HOURS, SEVERAL PEOPLE WALKED OUT WITH THEIR HANDS UP.
AND SOME EMPLOYEES CLIMBED OUT A STORAGE WINDOW ON A LADDER.
Sean Gerace/Trader Joe's Employee: "After getting the attention of a swat officer and indicating that i wanted to get out the ladder and getting a thumbs up and I went down the ladder and three of my other coworkers followed me out."
POLICE SAID THE SUSPECT WAS ON THE PHONE WITH L-A-P-D HOSTAGE NEGOTIATORS DURING THE STANDOFF....
HE HANDCUFFED HIMSELF -- THEN SURRENDERED TO AUTHORITIES.
