#NEWS: Palestinians sue US over embassy move at UN's top court
The United States has been hit with a lawsuit by the Palestinians at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, which argues that the U.S. embassy move to Jerusalem violated international law.
"This step comes in line with the policy of the State of Palestine, which aims to preserve the character of the holy city of Jerusalem with its unique spiritual, religious and cultural dimensions," Palestinian Authority Foreign Minister Riyad Al-Maliki said in a statement Saturday, according to the official Palestinian news agency Wafa.
The suit claims that the embassy relocation is in breach of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, and requests the ICJ order the US "to withdraw the diplomatic mission from the Holy City of Jerusalem," the court stated in a press release.
The Palestinians also asked the court to demand the US "provide assurances and guarantees of non-repetition of its unlawful conduct."
The United Nations recognized the State of Palestine as a 'non-member observer state' with a vote at the UN General Assembly in 2012, however, Palestinian statehood is not recognized by the United States or by most European countries.
The US Embassy in Jerusalem was inaugurated on May 14, five months after the Trump administration announced the decision to move the embassy from Tel Aviv.
