Video Description | Various movie clips and sots. |
Script | LEAD: Many are calling 19-96 one of the best years for female movie roles in recent memory. Film Critic Sara Voorhees gives us a look at some of those performance, new on home video. SCRIPT: (MOVIE CLIP)Women have never had it easy in Hollywood, but they're fighting back, at least in the movies. In "Courage Under Fire", Denzel Washington runs into a military mystery when he investigates the Desert Storm death of a medevac captain, played by Meg Ryan who is being considered for the Medal of Honor. It's an intelligent emotionally complex story, with excellent performances by Washington and Ryan.(MOVIE CLIP)And Lily Taylor gives a rare performance that draws the audience into the mind of a thoroughly bizarre character in "I Shot Andy Warhol." She plays the outraged feminist Valerie Solanas, who wrote the SCUM Manifesto and actually shot Andy Warhol. It's a furiously alive and oddly toughing movie.(MOVIE CLIP)Jude is the film adaption of Thomas Hardy's very depressing novel about ill-fated lovers. Kate Winslet gives a heart-wrenching performance as the poverty-stricken mother of three children whose world falls to pieces when her older son believes the family is poor because of him. Don't see this without a good supply of Kleenex.(MOVIE CLIP)And "Harriet The Spy"...taken from the popular children's book...is about a feisty and curious sixth grader whose nanny, played by Rosie O'Donnell offers some good advice when Harriet's extremely observant notes about her peers get her in trouble. It's an incredibly fast-paced little movie with good performances by O'Donnell and Michelle Trachtenberg.(MOVIE CLIP)I'm Sara Voorhees reporting. |
