LEAD: More than 80 Chicago area fugitives are arrested, after a widespread gang crackdown by the Cook County Sheriff's Department It's called Operation Safe Streets Authorities call it one of the largest sweeps ever carried out in Cook County Nadine Arroyo has more SCRIPT: The countywide arrests started early Wednesday and were not fiished until Saturday When it was over, arrest warrants were served on a total of 89 wanted felons The four day, Operation Safe Streets targeted active gang members, or fugitives with some gang affiliation (sot, Michael Sheahan, Cook County Sheriff) Charges range from armed robbery and resisting arrest to possession of a controlled substance Among those under arrest, 24-year old Chenier Alsotn of Chicago, called one of the state's top twenty gang fugitives Alleged gang member Larry Johnson of Chicago, who reportedly fired shots from a C-H-A building within two blocks of King High School, and 22-year old Richard Nafzinger of Des Plaines, who allegedly threatened to kill a 14-year old girl if she did not join his gang (sot, Andrew Douvris, Cook County Sheriff's Police) Cook County authorities say they have stepped up the number of detectives in gang-units to fight gang violence and they say the sweep is proof of their efforts (sot, Dick Devine, Cook Co State's Attorney) The Sheriff's department credits the sucess of Operation Safe Streets to the cooperation of different law enforcement agenciesa united front they say they will need to hold strong to continue fighting the spread of gang crimes Nadine Arroyo, reporting
