Cancer survivor runs marathon
LEAD: Sunday's LA Marathon was especially sweet for one courageous athlete Earlier in his life, many thought he would never participate in the marathon But as Reporter Gay Yee shows us, his approach to life proved them wrong SCRIPT: Over 19-thousand people turned out (SOT) Looking forward to 26-miles (SOT) Twenty-six miles of hard pavement, and sore muscles (SOT) While this marathon was a first for many, Jack Riley is a veteran of many marathons The 63-year-old triathelete has run in hundreds of races, although the last few, he's run with cancer (SOT) And Riley refuses to allow prostate cancer to stop him Only this time its a family affair with his two sons, Rich and Bobby by his side (SOT) (NATSND) (SOT) At the six mile mark, Riley's daughters and grandchildren waited with 150 members of the Wellness Community a cancer support group The group renamed the portion of the race The Mile of Hope (NATSND) And coming down the stretch, the captain of the team of hope, Jack Riley The detour added precious minutes to his time but it's an emotional refueling for Jack Riley that pumps him up for the final 20 miles ahead (NATSND) (SOT) (NATSND) Then flashing V's for victory Riley hit the road revitalized (NATSND) And hours later, an exuberant Jack Riley crossed the finish line with his two sons (NATSND) For Jack Riley, the moment proved something to himself and other cancer patients (SOT)
