El Monte, California, April 1 Harland Braun, Marco DeGennaro's Attorney Vibiana Andrade, Maldef Attorney Wayne Garcia, Reporting
file of CHP beating Mexicans, patrol car, praphic of officer epithet, sot, graphic, sots.
A racial slur picked up on a audio tape of the beating of illegal immigrants by Sheriff’s Deputies is getting new attention.
LEAD: An ethnic slur, uttered just after last week's beating of illegal immigrants. A slur that may have been made by a California Highway Patrol officer and captured on audi otape. Reporter Wayne Garcia has a copy of the tape and the story behind it. SCRIPT: By now you've seen the actions of two Riverside Country deputies as they arrested two suspected illegal immigrants. And you've probably noticed the restraint used by the third lawman on the freeway embankment that day, CHP Officer Marco DeGennaro. But now the CHP is coming under fire because of the language used possibly by a CHP officer that day. A racial slur against the Mexican nationals was caught on tape by the same person who recorded the sounds of the beating, Marco Degennaro. DeGennaro, like many officers that day, had just chased down and arrested an illegal immigrant. He was sitting in his patrol car feeling ill, when, DeGennaro says through his lawyer, a fellow CHP officer came up to him and started that conversation. (SOT) Attorney Harland Braun says his client didn't recognize the officer who uttered the slur so he may have been from a different CHP substation. The CHP says officers from three stations responded that day, from East L.A., Baldwin Hills, and from Sante Fe Springs. (SOT) (SOT) Vibiana Andrade is an attorney for the Mexican American Legal Defense And Education Fund and says the slur isn't minor and only goes to demonstrate what she feels was the racial undercurrent to the whole series of arrests.
