LEAD: THE U-S DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION HAS IN INVESTIGATION INTO AN OHIO BASED COURT-REPORTING SCHOOL THAT ABRUPTLY SHUT DOWN THIS YEAR. THE STENOTYPE INSTITUTE CLOSED, LEAVING ONE THOUSAND STUDENTS IN SEVERAL STATES WITHOUT THE EDUCATION THEY PAID FOR. THE SCHOOLS WERE LOCATED THE OHIO COMMUNITIES OF LIMA, COLUMBUS, DAYTON, CINCINNATI, AND SPRINGFIELD. AND THE SCHOOL HAD CLASSROOMS IN LOUISVILLE, INDIANAPOLIS, LITTLE ROCK AND BATON ROUGE. WHEN THE SCHOOLS CLOSED, MANY OF ITS STUDENTS DID NOT RECEIVE REFUNDS FOR FEDERAL STUDENT LOANS THEY'D PAID FOR. NOW, THE GOVERNMENT WANTS ITS MONEY FROM THE STUDENTS. AND THE FEDS ARE LOOKING INTO JUST WHAT HAPPENED AT THE SCHOOL. REPORTER PHIL HAYES SAYS THE THE SCHOOL CLOSED ITS DOORS UNDER THE NOSES OF GOVERNMENT WATCHDOGS. TAG: PENNY GERDEMAN APPLIED FOR WHAT'S CALLED LOAN FORGIVENESS, BUT HER APPLICATION WAS DENIED. TAX DOLLARS WILL PAY THE BILLS FOR ANY FORGIVEN LOANS, AND FOR THE MONEY WASTED WHEN THOSE LOANS GO INTO DEFAULT.
