Script | FELINE LEUKEMIA VIRUS IS THE LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH AND DISEASE IN CATS THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES ... AND WHILE A VACCINE IS AVAILABLE TO IMMUNIZE CATS, IT'S ONLY ABOUT FIFTY PERCENT EFFECTIVE. NOW UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA VETERINARIANS ARE USING D-N-A TESTING TO UNDERSTAND HOW MUTATIONS IN A KEY GENE MAY ENABLE THE VIRUS TO BECOME EVEN MORE DEADLY U-F IS SEEKING FIVE-HUNDRED INFECTED CATS TO PARTICIPATE IN A NEW STUDY. BY TESTING BLOOD SAMPLES FROM THE CATS DURING A TWO YEAR PERIOD, UF SCIENTISTS HOPE TO LEARN WHY SOME CATS ARE IMMUNE TO FELINE LEUKEMIA WHILE OTHERS BECOME INFECTED.THE VIRUS IS TRANSMITTED AMONG CATS BY CLOSE CONTACT WITH AN INFECTED CAT, ESPECIALLY THROUGH SOCIAL GROOMING OR THE SHARING OF FOOD OR WATER BOWLS. THOMPSON SAYS THE BLOOD SAMPLES NEEDED FOR TESTING CAN BE COLLECTED BY FAMILY VETERINARIANS AND SENT TO HIM AT THE U-F VETERINARY MEDICAL TEACHING HOSPITAL. |
