AERIALS OF DERAILED CARS, GROUND SHOTS OF DERAIL, SOT
A BURLINGTON NORTHERN TRAIN HAS DERAILED NEAR HAYDEN, IDAHO. ELEVEN CARS ON A BURLINGTON NORTHERN FREIGHT TRAIN DERAILED ABOUT FOUR MILES NORTHEAST OF RATHDRUM, IDAHO AT ABOUT TEN THURSDAY MORNING. SOME OF THE CARS CAUGHT FIRE, AND NEARBY ROADS WERE CLOSED AS CREWS TRIED TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THEY WERE DEALING WITH. CREWS WERE CONCERNED THAT WHAT WAS BURNING WAS ONE OF SIX TANKERS FILLED WITH MOLTEN SULFUR. BUT THEY SOON FOUND OUT THREE CARS CARRYING LUMBER WERE ON FIRE. THE PLUME FO SMOKE COULD BE SEEN FOR MILES. BURLINGTON NORTHERN OFFICIALS SAY THE TRAIN WAS HEADING FROM SPOKANE TO CHICAGO. THERE WERE NO INJURIES, AND NO HAZARDOUS MATERIALS SPILLED, LEAKED OR BURNED. SOME RESIDENTS NEARBY WRE EVACUATED. THE DERAILEMNT CAUSED DALAYS OF OTHER BURLINGTON TRAINS. CREWS STARTED TAKING THE CARS APART. USING CRANES AND OTHER HEAVY EQUIPMENT. OFFICIALS SAY THEY'LL BE AT THE SCENE FOR A WHILE CLEANING UP THE MESS.
