SMOKE OVER MOUNTAINS, AERIALS.
FIRES IN SANTA YNEZ VALLEY IN CALIFORNIA FORCED FIREFIGHTERS TO FLEE AS THE WILDERNESS BLAZE JUMPED A FIRE LINE. NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED BUT FOUR FIRE TRUCKS SUSTAINED MINOR HEAT DAMAGE. THE WEEK-OLD FIRE HAS SCORCHED ABOUT 31,000 ACRES OF BRUSH AND TIMBER. 12 RESIDENTS OF ZACA LAKE IN LOS PADRES NATIONAL FOREST WERE EVACUATED AT 2 A.M. MORE THAN 3,000 FIREFIGHTERS WERE ASSIGNED TO THE BLAZE, WHICH FIRE INVESTIGATORS SAY WAS CAUSED BY A HUNTER WHOSE CIGARETTE SPARKED THE FIRE A WEEK AGO. THE HUNTER HAS SIGNED A STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITY.
