That's why architectural historian Carol Willis founded the Skyscraper Museum 3 years ago, and that's one reason her museum is downtown Willis goes so far as to say that skyscrapers and NY are synonymous And, Willis says, the large number of skyscrapers lining the Manhattan skyline is really a compliment to the city But while downtown NY may have been the birthplace of the skyscraper, several famous towers are further north like the Empire State Building And that's the focus of the museum's current offering That includes photos of the construction documents like drawings & blueprints and a 50 minute film that shows the design & construction of the famed building And here's something you don't hear these days The building was built both under budget & ahead of schedule (:05) Now that's an achievement! And this is one museum that wants you to look up when you leave
LEAD: While most know this neighborhood was the birthplace of New York City, it's also the birthplace of an American icon: the skyscraper
