Japanese folks are very interested in the story of Bonnie and Clyde.. so much so a film crew is in the US making a docudrama about the pair.
LEAD: AN JAPANESE FILM CREW IS SPENDING SOME TIME IN MISSOURI THIS WEEK. THEY'RE HERE VISITING A PLACE OF NOTORIOUS HISTORY... A HOME WHERE BONNIE AND CLYDE LIVED FOR A TIME IN 1933 AND WHERE THEY PAIR HAD A SHOOTOUT WITH POLICE. WALT MCCLURE HAS MORE ON THE JAPANESE FILM CREWS STOP IN JOPLIN. TAKE PKG/SCRIPT: NATS An unusual sight for this quiet Joplin neighborhood.. a Japanese film crew setting up their equipment. The focus of their attention, this house near the corner of 34th street and Oak Ridge, a one-time hideout for notorious criminals Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow. SOT "Many people are fascinated with the ganster era in the US, especially with Bonnie and Clyde. It involves more of a romance between this man and woman and the tragedy of their death." The crew is here to shoot scenes for an Unsolved Mysteries type program in Japan. They say the Bonnie and Clyde story has become popular ever since the 1967 movie came out. SOT "We're trying to focus on what kind of personality they actually had and more the true story behind their activities." The shootout drew attention from neighbors, including a 12 year old boy, who found himself watching the deadly shootout. SOT " It sounded like firecrackers going off. We stopped our bikes and stood there and looked back over here." Claud Speer knew one of the two police officers killed and says that April day is forever in his mind. SOT "Every so often I drive out here to look at this place and sit and think about it, you know." TAG: The Japanese crew has also been to Texas and to Louisiana, where the pair met their deaths in a furious blast of bullets. The Japanese program will run early next month. MIDSOUTH
