Mayo Clinic doctors and nurses provided -immediate- medical care and supplies to Kosovar refugees. But they are also looking to the future, and how the refugees will rebuild their country and their lives.
LEAD: A TEAM OF DOCTORS AND NURSES FROM THE MAYO CLINIC IN ROCHESTER, MINNESOTA PROVIDED IMMEDIATE CARE TO REFUGEES IN KOSOVO. BUT THEY ARE ALSO LOOKING TO THE FUTURE,A ND HOW THE REFUGEES WILL REBUILD THEIR COUNTRY AND THEIR LIVES. LYNSEY PAULO WENT TO ALBANIA AND FILES THIS REPORT. SCRIPT: MORE THAN FIVE THOUSAND MILES FROM MINNESOTA, ALBANIA SEEMS LIKE WORLDS AWAY. EUROPE'S POOREST COUNTRY HAS BECOME HOME TO KOSOVARS FORCED FROM THEIR COUNTRY. AT ITS PEAK, ALBANIA TOOK IN NEARLY HALF A MILLION REFUGEES, MORE THAN ANY OTHER NATION. (SOT) TWO HUNDRED THOUSAND REFUGEES LIVE WITH ALBANIAN HOST FAMILIES...THE REST LIVE IN CAMPS. WE WENT WITH A TEAM OF DOCTORS AND NURSES FROM THE MAYO CLINIC IN ROCHESTER, AS THEY VISITED SOME OF THOSE CAMPS. SINCE APRIL, 23-HUNDRED KOSOVARS CALLED THIS OLD,ABANDONED TOBACCO FACTORY HOME. (SOT) HUNDREDS OF NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS, OR N-G-O'S, ARE WORKING WITH REFUGEES IN ALBANIA. AT THIS CAMP'S HEALTH CLINIC, RELIEF WORKERS SEE ONE HUNDRED FIFTY PATIENTS A DAY. THIS CHILD HAS MENINGITIS. HIS MOTHER HAS TO CARRY HIM BECAUSE SHE DOESN'T HAVE A STROLLER. (SOT) IT'S THE LITTLE THINGS THAT WOULD MEAN SO MUCH. THIS WOMAN COOKS PEPPERS FOR FIFTEEN PEOPLE. (SOT) WHAT THEY DO HAVE IS HOPE AND A SMILE, EVEN FOR A STRANGER. A DOCTOR FROM A FAR AWAY LAND. (NAT SOUND) (SOT) EVERYWHERER THE MAYO TEAM TURNS, THERE ARE STRIKING REALITIES. (SOT) THIS YOUNG GIRL SHOWS US HOW SHE'S CAREFULLY PACKED HER CLOTHING FOR THE TRIP HOME. (STANDUP) FAMILIES POOL THEIR MONEY, TO RENT TRUCKS FOR THE TRIP. PILING BELONGING AND PEOPLE INTO THE BACK. (NAT SOUND) THIS GROUP OF COLLEGE STUDENTS HAS SENT A SCOUT FIRST. (SOT) STILL,THEY RETURN BY THE THOUSANDS. BY THE TIME WE GOT TO THIS CAMP IN KAVAJE, IT WAS ALREADY EMPTY. THE LAST REFUGEES BOARDED THE BUSES THE NIGHT BEFORE, BUT MANY REFUGEES WON'T HAVE THAT CHOICE (SOT UNDER) THE SICK, THE ELDERLY AND THOSE THAT CAN'T AFFORD A RIDE BACK TO KOSOVO WILL STAY. NOBODY KNOWS YET HOW MANY THERE WILL BE. BUT ONE RELIEF AGENCY - MINNEAPOLIS BASED AMERICAN REFUGEE COMMITTEE, OR ARC, WILL BE HEERE FOR THEM EVEN THOUGH OTHER AGNCIES ARE LEAVING. (SOT) IN A COUNTRY WITH A CRUMBLING ECONOMY AND INFRASTRUCTURE. STILL, ALBANIANS HAVE WELCOMED THE KOSOVARS INTO THEIR OWN FORGOTTEN COUNTRY. AND NOW, THE WORLD IS TAKING NOTICE. (SOT) THE MAYO CLINIC WILL HELP WITH MEDICAL KNOWLEDGE AND TRAINING. MINNESOTANS HAVE ALREADY HELPED, GIVING ONE AND A HALF MILLION DOLLARS IN AID THROUGH A-R-C. BUT AS THE MAYO TEAM HAS SEEN, THERE IS MORE TO BE DONE. TO REPAIR A COUNTRY, AND HELP AN ENTIRE PEOPLE RECOVER. IN ALBANIA, LYNSEY PAULO, CHANNEL FIVE EYEWITNESS NEWS. SUNRISE
