CIGARETTE COMPANIES ARE TESTING NEW PRODUCTS WHICH COULD BE SAFER.
(LEAD:) CIGARETTE COMPANIES ARE TEST MARKETING SOME NEW PRODUCTS WHICH ARE AIMED AT MAKING CIGARETTE SMOKING SAFER. BUT, DO THE PRODUCTS WORK? WELL, IN OUR FIRST TEST, THE PRODUCT FAILED. NOW, THE NEXT TWO TESTS. DAVE STANLEY HAS THE BOTTOM LINE. (TAKE PKG:) (NATS--MUSIC "Smoke, smoke, smoke that cigarette. Puff, puff, puff but if you puff yourself to death...") YOU KIND OF GET THE FEELING THAT EVEN FOLKS BACK IN THE 40'S... WHEN THIS SONG WAS WRITTEN... KNEW THAT SMOKING WASN'T SUCH A HOT IDEA. TODAY, WE'RE A LOT MORE EDUCATED. (SOT- "It's not good for...") BUT SOME THINGS NEVER CHANGE. MILLIONS CONTINUE TO SMOKE. (SOT- "If I knew they were making a cigarette that cuts back on the cancer causing ingredients, I would smoke it.") AND THAT'S JUST WHAT STAR SCIENTIFIC, A CIGARETTE MANUFACTURER IS HOPING FOR. THE BRAND IS CALLED ADVANCE. IT'S BEING TEST MARKETED IN VIRGINIA AND KENTUCKY. AND, ALTHOUGH THE COMPANY IS VERY CLEAR TO POINT OUT, THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A SAFE CIGARETTE. IT ALSO CLAIMS TO HAVE REDUCED NITRO-SAMEENS, CANCER CAUSING TOXINS IN CIGARETTES, BY 70 PERCENT. MELANIE SNOW LIKES THE IDEA. (SOT- "It's an unhealthy habit. It's hard to break. Anything that cuts me a break I'm all for it.") SO, WE GAVE MELANIE ONE TO TEST OUT. AS WE DID WITH DEBORAH BANKS AND DEBRA HILL.. PETE FLOWE AND DAVE LEGASSIE. THE RESULTS... (SOT- "I was ready for my afternoon cigarette and it did the job.") (SOT- "Just knowing that it doesn't have as many of the cancer causing chemicals in it that would be enough for me to switch.") (SOT- "Would that be enough to make you switch? 100 percent.") BUT, SAYS DR. TURNER, A CARDIOLOGIST, NOT SO FAST. (SOT- "Nicotine levels have not changed. This is not okay.") NEXT, WE TEST OUT AN ENTIRELY NEW CONCEPT IN SMOKING. ACCORDING TO PHILIP MORRIS, IT PRODUCES LESS SMOKE... NO LINGERING ODOR... AND NO ASHES. THE CIGARETTE, ACCORD, IS PLACED IN A PUFF ACTIVATED LIGHTER, AND BURNS FROM THE INSIDE. YOU GET A TOTAL OF EIGHT PUFFS, BUT YOU CAN TAKE THEM HOURS APART. AND ASSOCIATE PRODUCER FIRST TESTS THE PRODUCT IN A CAFETERIA. (SOT- "Did you smell anything? No. Nothing unusual? Nothing unusual.") (SOT- "We smelled something. We commented on it. You know how someone comes in from having a cigarette and they stink? That's what I thought I smelled.") SO, HOW DID BRAD FEEL ABOUT SMOKING IT? (SOT- "Stupid. I felt stupid holding it.") WHEN WE TESTED IT OUT DOWNTOWN, THE STORY WAS PRETTY MUCH THE SAME. THEY LIKED THE FACT THAT IT DIDN'T GIVE OFF MUCH 2ND HAND SMOKE, IT'S JUST THAT... WELL... IT WAS LIKE SMOKING A BEEPER. (TAG:) PRICE-WISE, THE CIGARETTES ARE ABOUT THE SAME. THE PUFF ACTIVATED LIGHTER, COST ABOUT.... A YEAR. AGAIN, IT'S STILL BEING MARKETED. DR. TURNER, THE CARDIOLOGIST, WASN'T TOO CRAZY ABOUT THIS PRODUCT, SAYING IT MIGHT BE BETTER FOR THE PEOPLE AROUND A SMOKER, BUT IT STILL CAUSES HARM TO THE SMOKER. 1200 FEED-DATE: 00NOV28 1200
