THE EFFORTS TO GET A PHOTOGRAPH TO "GRACE" A US POSTAGE STAMP
ONE OF MINNESOTA'S MOST FAMOUS PICTURES COULD END UP ON A STAMP. IT'S THE IMAGE OF A MAN WHO HAPPENED TO WALK BY A PHOTOGRAPHER. JASON DAVIS HAS THE STORY... (TAKE PKG) 84 YEAR OLD RHODA NYBERG IS AN ACCOMPLISHED ARTIST. FOR DECADES SHE HAS TURNED OUT ATTRACTIVE WATER COLORS AND OILS OF FLOWERS AND LANDSCAPES. BUT THE MOST SUCCESSFUL OF HER WORKS WAS A SIMPLE PHOTOGRAPH THAT SHE COLORED MANY, MANY TIMES. RHODA'S FATHER, ERIC ENSTROM USED TO OWN A PHOTOGRAPHIC STUDIO IN BOVEY, MINNESOTA. ONE DAY IN 1918 HE SAW AN OLD PEDDLER NAMED CHARLES WILDEN WALKING ON THE STREET. THERE WAS NO COLOR FILM IN THOSE DAYS SO IT WAS COMMON PRACTICE TO HAND PAINT PICTURES AND THAT'S WHERE RHODA CAME IN. SHE EVEN ADDED LIGHT FROM A NON EXISTENT WINDOW. THE PHOTOGRAPH CAME TO BE KNOWN SIMPLY AS 'GRACE'. OVER THE PAST EIGHTY YEARS MILLIONS OF COPIES HAVE BEEN SOLD. FORMER SCHOOL TEACHER BRIAN CARLSON HEADS A CAMPAIGN TO IMMORTALIZE THE PICTURE 'GRACE' ON A POSTAGE STAMP. RHODA IS FLATTERED BY THE SUGGESTION THAT HER FATHERS WORK MAY ONE DAY BE ON A POSTAGE STAMP ALTHOUGH SHE WONT GET A PENNY. THE COPYRIGHT RAN OUT YEARS AGO. <"I think it would certainly be as nice as a lot of these stamps they are printing on."> <"Could be much worse."> THE UNITED STATES POSTAL SERVICE IS CONSIDERING THE SUGGESTION AND THEY NEEDN'T WORRY ABOUT ANY RELIGIOUS CONFLICT. RHODA SAYS THE BOOK IN THE PAINTING IS A DICTIONARY, NOT A BIBLE. IN COLERAINE, MINNESOTA, THIS IS JASON DAVIS REPORTING. TAG: THE FOLKS PROMOTING "GRACE" AS A STAMP HAVE ASKED FOR YOUR HELP. THEY WANT TO TRACK DOWN THE RELATIVES OF THE MAN IN THE PICTURE, CHARLES WILDEN. IN 1918, HE LIVED IN GRAND RAPIDS, MINNESOTA. IF YOU HAVE ANY INFORMATION ABOUT HIS RELATIVES YOU CAN CALL BRIAN CARLSON AT 218 327 1522. OR E-MAIL HIM AT BRIAN FIFTY AT PAUL BUNYAN DOT NET. RECAP
