A HEAD INJURY CAN LEAD TO A DRAMATIC LIFE CHANGE, INCLUDING HAVING TO RE-LEARN BASIC SKILLS. A REHAB PROGRAM IN FLORIDA WORKS TO HELP SUCH PATIENTS LEARN TO LIVE AGAIN.
LEAD: WE LEARN A LOT OF THINGS AT A VERY YOUNG AGE...HOW TO TIE OUR SHOES...FOLD LAUNDRY...COOK...OR TAKE CARE OF OUR BILLS. NOW IMAGINE HAVING TO LEARN ALL OF THOSE THINGS ALL OVER AGAIN. PATIENTS WHO SUFFER A HEAD TRAUMA INJURY HAVE TO DO JUST THAT. CHARLEY BELCHER TAKES A LOOK AT A REHAB PROGRAM HELPING PEOPLE LEARN HOW TO LIVE AGAIN. SCRIPT: YOU'D NEVER KNOW BRYAN KARNES SPENT FOUR DAYS IN A COMA, AFTER CRASHING AN A-T-V. (NATS) HE'S A MASTER-SERGEANT IN THE AIR FORCE.. AND HAD TO BE TAUGHT HOW TO FRY AN EGG. (SOT KARNES: It's been a real eye opener for me for how difficult it is for people to deal with this type of injury. HARD TO BELIEVE GLENN DOWNING WAS OUT OF IT FOR FOUR MONTHS AFTER A CAR CRASH IN DOWNTOWN ST. PETE. HE WAS A MANAGER WITH FLORIDA POWER FOR 43 YEARS...AND HAD TO BE TAUGHT HOW TO PAY HIS BILLS. (SOT DOWNING: And here I came in here at can hardly add 3 and 5 together without getting the wrong answer.) HEAD INJURIES ARE OFTEN REFERRED TO AS THE INVISIBLE INJURY. IT DOESN'T TAKE A CAST...OR A BANDAGE...BUT LOTS OF HARD WORK...TO GET THAT BRAIN WORKING AGAIN. AND THAT'S WHAT THEY DO HERE...GET IT WORKING AGAIN. IT'S CALLED THE COMPREHENSIVE OUTPATIENT BRAIN INJURY PROGRAM. ONE ROOM THAT REPRESENTS LIFE--PART KITCHEN, PART OFFICE, PART GYM: ALL WITH ONE GOAL: (SOT VEGA: To help them be reintegrated back into the community so that they can function either at home or at work or school or wherever it may be.) (NATS:Some of these that we're doing today are working on your ability to concentrate.) THE REHAB VARIES FROM PATIENT TO PATIENT...SINCE EACH INJURY IS DIFFERENT. SOME NEED MORE PHYSICAL REHAB...FOR OTHERS THE FOCUS IS SPEECH. (NATS: How many days are in a week. Good. Seven.) AND GLENN HERE LEARNS TO CONTROL HIS ARMS WHILE STANDING...WHILE REMEMBERING HOW TO FOLD LAUNDRY. (SOT KARNES: The frustration part has really been very difficult, not being able to do what I want to do, when I want to do it.) (SOT DOWNING: I walked in here and they said what is your goal? And I said you get me on my feet so I can play a game of golf and they said you got it.) (STANDUP: Somtimes the rehab includes a field trip. Today they came to Kmart to do a little shopping. Just to get that hands on experience to regain confidence and learn how to live again.) (NATS: Which one would that be through here? Good job!) (SOT KARNES: Before the injury I never thought about that I would need this kind of care or would need this type of training, it's just really good to know it's there in case you need it.) WE ALL TAKE LIFE FOR GRANTED...BUT THESE FOLKS NEVER WILL AGAIN. LIFE'S SIMPLE TASKS TAKE ON MORE MEANING TO THEM...BECAUSE THEY ARE A REMINDER OF JUST THAT: LIFE. TAG: THE OUTPATIENT BRAIN INJURY PROGRAM THROUGH BAYFRONT IS CONSIDERED A MODEL PROGRAM IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA...BOASTING A BETTER RECOVERY RATE FOR THEIR PATIENTS THAN THE NATIONAL AVERAGE.
