NATIONAL GUARD TROOPS FROM NEW JERSEY MOVE INTO NEWARK AIRPORT TO TAKE UP SECURITY DUTIES.
LEAD: NATIONAL GUARD TROOPS ARE ON THE GROUND AT NEWARK AIRPORT PROVIDING EXTRA SECURITY. THE TROOPS PRESENCE IS SUPPOSED TO RESTORE TRAVELERS CONFIDENCE AND GET PEOPLE FLYING AGAIN. IT'S THE FIRST TIME THE NEW JERSEY NATIONAL GUARD HAS BEEN DEPLOYED AT NEWARK NATIONAL AIRPORT FOR SECURITY. THERE WERE GUARDS THERE IN 1968 TO HELP WITH THE BERLIN AIRLIFT BUT THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THEY'VE BEEN DEPLOYED HERE ON A SECURITY MISSION. LERON KORNREICH IS AT NEWARK AIRPORT. SCRIPT: (SOT- "The troops that we called up for this are mainly out of our combat unit so they're already very skilled at security procedures. They did go through specialized training with the FAA as well as port authority on airport specific tasks.") 30 NATIONAL GUARD TROOPS ARRIVED AT NEWARK AIRPORT THIS MORNING. PASSENGERS WILL SPOT THEM AS THEY PASS THROUGH SECURITY CHECKS AT GATES. THE GUARDS ARE NOT REPLACING EXISTING SECURITY -- THEY'RE GIVING AN EXTRAS HAND TO STATE TROOPERS, PORT AUTHORITY POLICE, AND AIRLINE SECURITY PERSONNEL WHO ARE ALREADY ON HAND. PASSENGERS FLYING FOR THE 1ST TIME SINCE SEPT. 11 TOLD THEY ARE HAPPY ABOUT THE EXTRA SECURITY. (SOT- "I think its great they should have some kind of protection for people. They should have done this years ago.") (SOT- "Maybe with reinforced security checking us in and people who work for the airline being more alert I feel more secure. I feel actually this is probably the safest time to fly.") (SOT- "I'm not really worried. I think we're probably safer now with the extra security and everything.") (STANDUP- "The national guard troops are armed with M-16's. Their supervisors are carrying military pistols. They are also patrolling Atlantic city and Mercer County Airports.")
