MONEY IS BEING RAISED TO ERECT A MONUMENT TO THE 101ST AIRBORNE DIVISION.
LEAD: AS FORT CAMPBELL SOLDIERS PREPARE TO JOIN THE WAR ON TERRORISM, 101-ST AIRBORNE VETERANS ARE LOOKING BACK ON THE DIVISION'S PROUD HISTORY. IT'S THE STUFF OF LEGEND, WRITTEN IN PLACES LIKE NORMANDY, BASTOGNE IN WORLD WAR TWO AND HAMBURGER HILL IN VIET NAM. AND AS SCOTT COUCH SHOWS US, IT'S A STORY THAT WILL SOON BE WRITTEN IN STONE. (TAKE PKG) SCRIPT: (SOT- "they're proud to be an eagle.") (SOT-NO SUPER "one of the elite divisions in the United States Army.") THE MEN AND WOMEN WHO WEAR THE PATCH OF THE 101-ST AIRBORNE DIVISION HAVE A LOT TO LIVE UP TO. (SOT-NO SUPER "I had 129 static line parachute jumps.") THEY WALK IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF PIONEERS --- SOLDIERS WHO JUMPED OUT OF AIRPLANES, SURVIVED AND SUCCEEDED IN THE FACE OF OVERWHELMING ODDS. (SOT-Jim Patton=101-st Airborne Veteran "they identified 10 German divisions around the 101-st. Most of them I think, tanks. To say the least it was quite a battle.") THE 101-ST HELD THE GERMANS AT BASTOGNE. THEY PARACHUTED INTO FRANCE THE NIGHT BEFORE THE NORMANDY INVASION -- PAVING THE WAY TO VICTORY. AND THEIR HISTORY WILL SOON BE CHISELED IN STONE. (SOT-Billy Colwell=Monument Designer "I designed the monument to encompass the entire history of the division.") BILLY COLWELL SERVED WITH THE 101-ST IN VIETNAM. NOW ON THE BOARD OF THE 101-ST AIRBORNE FOUNDATION, HE IS SPEARHEADING EFFORTS TO CONSTRUCT A DIVISION MEMORIAL. AND AT THE TOP OF COLWELL'S MODEL: SOLDIERS FROM EACH ERA STANDING BENEATH AN ETERNAL FLAME. (SOT-Billy Colwell=101-st Foundation "the most important part of a division is not its name, its patch, what its done or what it may do. It's the people" The base will be made of granite decorated with aircraft from WWII, VietNam, Desert Storm and today. Organizers say it will celebrate the differences and the common thread that binds eagles together.") (SOT-Jim Patton- "every man around you had at least the nerve to jump out of an airplane which everybody doesn't have.") TAG: THE MONUMENT IS PROJECTED TO COST A LITTLE OVER A HALF-MILLION DOLLARS. THE 101-ST AIRBORNE FOUNDATION SAYS IT'S ONLY 10-THOUSAND DOLLARS AWAY FROM ORDERING THE 220-THOUSAND DOLLAR BASE. TAXPAYERS IN NEIGHBORING CLARKSVILLE AND MONTGOMERY COUNTY HAVE KICKED IN A HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS. BUT THEY STILL NEED HELP AND THEY'RE HOPING THE CURRENT GROUNDSWELL OF PATRIOTISM WILL PUSH THEM OVER THE TOP. IF YOU'D LIKE TO HELP, SEND YOUR CHECKS TO THE 101-ST AIRBORNE DIVISION ASSOCIATION MONUMENT FUND, PO BOX 929 FORT CAMPBELL -- 42223-0929. RECAP
