A TEEN WAS BEATEN TO DEATH IN THE BAY AREA BY ANOTHER TEEN. AN INVESTIGATION IS NOW UNDERWAY.
BRADENTON POLICE ARE LOOKING FOR SEVERAL STUDENTS IN CONNECTION WITH THE BEATING DEATH OF A MANATEE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT. THE POLICE HAVE ALREADY CHARGED ONE TEEN WITH MURDER...REPORTER BRIAN GOFF HAS MORE ON THE INVESTIGATION. (TAKE PKG) THE BEATING HAPPENED IN THIS PARKING LOT ON 6TH AVENUE AT 2:30 YESTERDAY AFTERNOON. THE POLICE HAVE CHARGED 17 YEAR OLD JOHN ACOSTA WITH MURDER. THEY SAY HE, AND PERHAPS OTHERS, BEAT 16 YEAR OLD JAMES BRIER TO DEATH. BOTH BOYS ATTENDED MANATEE HIGH SCHOOL AND THE FIGHT WAS APPARENTLY PLANNED THERE EARLIER IN THE DAY. POLICE ARE QUESTIONING A NUMBER OF STUDENTS... (SOT- "We have questioned a number of students and the school resource officer, nobody seems to know anything, but we hear that as many as 20 students witnessed the whole thing.") SCHOOL WASN'T IN SESSION AT MANATEE HIGH TODAY BECAUSE OF A TEACHER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DAY, BUT GRIEF COUNSELORS WERE ON HAND IF ANY STUDENTS NEEDED THEM. THE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL SAID SUCH BEHAVIOR BY STUDENTS WASN'T NORMAL ... (SOT- "We enjoy working with them, it is sad when something like this happens, but we have to focus our attention on the students who do what they are supposed to do.") THIS MORNING TWO MANATEE STUDENTS WERE STILL SHOCKED BY THE NEWS.... (SOT- "One of them started to call the other one names and and then they started to fight. It was like third graders nagging on each other.") (SOT- "I cried a lot when I heard. With the way things are in the world today you wonder why people have to fight over something like that.") WHEN BRADENTON POLICE FOUND 16 YEAR OLD JAMES BRIER HE WAS UNCONSCIOUS IN A FRIEND'S CAR. HE DIED UPON ARRIVAL AT THE MANATEE MEMORIAL HOSPITAL.... (SOT- "It is not a good thing what happened. It is hard to understand why it happened.") 17 YEAR OLD JAMES ACOSTA, NOW CHARGED WITH MURDER, REMAINS IN CUSTODY IN THE JUVENILE DETENTION CENTER. RECAP
